How to convert stp to 3mf file

Many 3D-printing slicers and consumer fabrication tools accept .3mf more reliably than CAD exchange files, so an engineering model may need conversion before slicing. The conversion also packages a printable mesh with units, multiple objects, colors, and other manufacturing data.

What the STP format is

STP or STEP, identified by .stp and .step, implements ISO 10303, the Standard for the Exchange of Product model data. It represents precise boundary-representation geometry, including surfaces, edges, solids, assemblies, and, depending on the STEP schema and exporting software, product structure, colors, and metadata.

Mechanical engineers, manufacturers, and CAD users exchange STP files between applications such as SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, CATIA, Siemens NX, Fusion, and FreeCAD. STEP geometry remains suitable for dimensional inspection and further CAD editing; it is not a triangle mesh and is not accepted directly by every slicer.

What the 3MF format is

3MF (.3mf) is a ZIP-based package standardized by the 3MF Consortium. Its model data is a polygon mesh, normally composed of triangular facets, rather than mathematically defined CAD surfaces and solids.

A 3MF package can contain mesh objects, units, multiple parts, colors, materials, build-plate placement, and print-related metadata. The format generally preserves scale and object structure more reliably than STL, although the specific data retained depends on the exporter and the application opening the file. PrusaSlicer, UltiMaker Cura, and Bambu Studio commonly support 3MF.

Convert with 101convert.com

  1. Open the STP-to-3MF conversion page on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the .stp or .step file.
  3. Start the conversion and download the generated .3mf file after processing finishes.
  4. Open the result in the intended slicer or 3D viewer and verify its dimensions, orientation, object count, and mesh condition.

This option converts the file without installing CAD software and is available free on 101convert.com. Do not upload confidential designs unless the service’s file-handling policy satisfies your security requirements.

Convert locally with FreeCAD

  1. Open FreeCAD and choose File → Open to load the STEP file.
  2. In the model tree, select the solid, body, or assembly components that should become printable. Hide construction geometry and unwanted components.
  3. Create a mesh from the selected shape using the Mesh workbench’s shape-to-mesh command. Use finer deviation and angular-deflection settings for curved surfaces or small features.
  4. Select the resulting mesh object or objects and choose File → Export. Save with the .3mf extension if 3MF is available in the export format list.
  5. Open the exported file in a slicer and check its dimensions, orientation, separate parts, and repair status.

FreeCAD commands and supported formats vary by version and workbench. If that installation cannot export 3MF, export the mesh to .stl and import it into a slicer that can save a 3MF project; this transfers mesh geometry only and does not restore STEP data.

Convert with a CAD application

CAD applications that support STEP import and 3MF or mesh export can perform the conversion directly. Use File → Open or File → Import, select the STEP model, choose the required body or components, then use the application’s 3MF or additive-manufacturing export command. Set the tessellation or mesh-resolution options before saving and confirm the document units.

Quality and compatibility limits

The conversion is not lossless. STEP stores exact analytic geometry, while 3MF stores a triangular approximation. Coarse tessellation can make cylinders visibly faceted, distort small features, or create defects during slicing. Finer tessellation improves surface fidelity but increases file size and can slow the slicer.

Measure a known dimension after opening the 3MF. Unit interpretation can differ between CAD programs, converters, and slicers; a model intended to be 25.4 mm must not import as 1 mm or 25.4 inches.

Assemblies may become separate 3MF objects, one merged mesh, or a combination of both. Confirm the result when components need independent colors, materials, movement, supports, or print settings. A 3MF file does not preserve the STEP feature tree, sketches, constraints, design history, editable dimensions, or parametric relationships, so retain the original STP file as the CAD and archival source.
