A PLY file usually contains a polygon mesh from a 3D scanner, modeling package, or 3D viewer, while FCSTD is FreeCAD’s document format. Convert it when the mesh must be opened, organized, or further processed in FreeCAD; conversion alone does not automatically create an editable parametric solid.

What the PLY format is

PLY, or Polygon File Format, stores vertices and polygon faces and can also contain normals, colors, and texture-related attributes. 3D scanners, photogrammetry applications, Blender, MeshLab, and other mesh tools commonly create it. PLY files may be ASCII or binary, and the format normally does not define reliable real-world units.

What the FCSTD format is

FCSTD is FreeCAD’s native document format. It can store a FreeCAD document containing mesh objects, Part shapes, solids, metadata, and—when created in FreeCAD—a parametric feature tree. Saving an imported PLY as FCSTD preserves it inside a FreeCAD document, but a mesh remains a mesh unless you explicitly convert it to a shape or solid.

How to actually convert PLY to FCSTD

Using FreeCAD:

  1. Install and open FreeCAD, then create a new document with File → New.
  2. Import the source file through the Mesh workbench using File → Import, or open model.ply directly if your FreeCAD version associates PLY with the mesh importer.
  3. Check the imported mesh in the 3D view. If the size is wrong, apply a scale based on the source model’s intended units; PLY itself may not contain unit information.
  4. Save the document with File → Save As and choose model.fcstd. This produces an FCStd document containing the imported mesh.

To attempt conversion into a FreeCAD shape, select the mesh, switch to the Part workbench, and use Part → Create shape from mesh. Select the resulting shape and use Part → Convert to solid when that command is available. Save the document again as model.fcstd. A valid solid requires a closed, consistently oriented, non-self-intersecting mesh.

For a no-installation option, the 101convert.com website can convert the file online for free. Verify the resulting FCStd file in FreeCAD because online conversion may preserve only the mesh representation and may discard colors or other PLY attributes.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

  • PLY-to-FCStd conversion is generally a container conversion, not a reconstruction of CAD history. Imported triangle meshes do not become editable sketches, constraints, or feature-based models.
  • High-resolution scans can contain millions of triangles. Reduce or repair the mesh in MeshLab, Blender, or FreeCAD before creating a Part shape; excessive triangle counts can make FCStd files slow to open and edit.
  • Open edges, holes, duplicate faces, self-intersections, and non-manifold geometry can prevent conversion to a solid. Repair the mesh before using Part → Create shape from mesh.
  • Vertex colors, face colors, textures, normals, and scanner metadata may not survive the conversion to a Part shape or solid. Keep the original PLY when those attributes are needed.
