Convert CGM to DWG

A recipient may need a CGM drawing in DWG to edit it in AutoCAD-compatible CAD software, add it to a project, or exchange it with a contractor. Conversion is mainly a format and geometry-recovery task because many CGM files contain plotted graphics rather than a native CAD model.

What the CGM format is

CGM, or Computer Graphics Metafile, is an ISO-standard vector graphics format for exchanging technical illustrations, diagrams, plotted graphics, and engineering documentation. It can store lines, arcs, polylines, text, markers, fills, clipping regions, and raster-like cell arrays. Common profiles include ATA and WebCGM, used in technical publications and aerospace, defense, and engineering documentation.

CGM files are produced by technical-illustration, documentation, publishing, and some older engineering systems. A CGM is not necessarily a CAD drawing: it may contain only the visible representation of geometry, without CAD layers, blocks, constraints, dimensions, parametric features, or meaningful object types.

What the DWG format is

DWG is the native drawing format associated with AutoCAD and is supported by applications such as BricsCAD, ZWCAD, and GstarCAD. Depending on the source and software, a DWG can store 2D and 3D geometry, layers, blocks, text styles, dimensions, layouts, metadata, and other CAD entities.

DWG is suitable when the recipient must edit the drawing in a CAD application or combine it with an existing project. It is version-sensitive, so select a DWG version that the recipient's software can open. Converting a CGM to DWG does not automatically create missing layers, constraints, blocks, or parametric intelligence.

Direct conversion with desktop software

ABViewer is a practical desktop option when the installed edition and release list CGM as an input format and DWG as an output format. Format support and export options vary by release, so confirm both formats in the vendor's current supported-format list before starting a batch conversion.

1. Copy the original CGM and open the copy with File → Open.
2. Inspect the page orientation, colors, line weights, text, fills, clipping, and apparent scale.
3. Choose File → Save As or File → Export, select DWG (*.dwg), and choose the recipient's DWG version if the program offers that option.
4. Preserve vector geometry and editable text where available. Do not select raster or image output when the objective is editable CAD linework.
5. Open the result in AutoCAD or another DWG editor. Check units, measure a known distance, inspect closed contours and text, and run the application's audit or repair command.

A batch converter such as reaConverter can be considered for multiple files only if its current edition explicitly supports CGM input and DWG output. Test one representative file first; batch conversion does not resolve missing fonts, ambiguous units, or unsupported CGM elements.

Conversion through DXF

If no installed converter writes DWG directly, use DXF as an intermediate format. CorelDRAW versions that support the required CGM profile can open CGM and export DXF; the available filters depend on the release and the source file.

1. Open the CGM in CorelDRAW with File → Open.
2. Use File → Export and select DXF. Choose a 2D export mode and retain the original scale or units when those controls are available.
3. Open the DXF in AutoCAD, BricsCAD, or another CAD editor.
4. Repair open polylines, remove unwanted duplicate segments, verify scale, and use Save As to write the required DWG version.

This route is generally appropriate for linework, but it can lose CGM fills, clipping, specialized text, transparency, and illustration-only objects. DXF also does not restore CAD semantics that were absent from the CGM.

Online conversion

For a nonconfidential file, an online service such as CADSoftTools Online CAD Converter may be used if its current format list explicitly shows CGM as input and DWG as output. Upload the file, select the target DWG version when offered, convert it, and validate the download in a CAD application.

Do not upload proprietary, export-controlled, personal, or otherwise sensitive drawings to a third-party service. Online format support changes, and a service may accept only particular CGM profiles or return a visual approximation rather than fully editable CAD geometry.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Verify scale and units. CGM coordinates may be expressed in device-independent metafile units or page coordinates rather than millimeters or inches. Measure a known feature and correct the drawing scale before issuing the DWG.
• Expect text changes. Missing fonts, unsupported encodings, and different text-placement rules can cause substituted fonts, altered spacing, or text converted to outlines. Install the source fonts where licensing permits and check whether text remains editable.
• Fills, hatch patterns, clipping paths, transparency, raster-like cell arrays, line caps, and joins may be simplified or omitted. Recreate hatch boundaries in the CAD program when necessary.
• Curves may be approximated with polylines, and a single visual object may become many separate segments. Inspect joins, arcs, and closed contours before using the file for measurements or manufacturing.
• A visual match does not prove dimensional accuracy or CAD editability. Compare critical geometry and dimensions with the original engineering source, not only with the displayed CGM.
• Save to the oldest DWG version required by the recipient, because newer entities may be discarded when saving to an older format and older CAD software may not open newer DWG files.
