Convert EXB to DWG

A drafting application or client may require a DWG file for editing, plotting, or CAD exchange. An EXB file is not one universal format, so the correct procedure depends on whether it came from CAXA CAD or Evernote.

Identify the EXB format

CAXA CAD uses .exb for native electronic drawing files. These files can contain editable CAD entities and may be exportable to DWG from CAXA CAD.

Evernote, particularly its Windows and Legacy desktop applications, also uses .exb for local note databases. An Evernote EXB can contain notes, metadata, images, PDFs, and attachments, but it is not a CAD drawing format. Renaming file.exb to file.dwg only changes the extension and creates an invalid DWG file.

Use the file's source, size, neighboring files, and the installed application to identify it. Do not upload an unidentified EXB database to a conversion website.

What DWG provides

DWG is the primary drawing format for AutoCAD and is supported by applications such as BricsCAD and DraftSight. It stores editable 2D and 3D geometry, layers, blocks, text, dimensions, layouts, coordinates, and other CAD data. The recipient's AutoCAD or CAD version determines which DWG release should be saved.

Convert a CAXA EXB file

1. Make a copy first. Close CAXA CAD and back up the original EXB file before exporting or running a batch operation.
2. Open the copy in the CAXA CAD edition that created it. Compatibility varies between CAXA products and releases; a generic CAD converter cannot reliably interpret a native EXB file.
3. Use File → Save As or the equivalent export command and select DWG. Choose the DWG version requested by the recipient, or use an older broadly supported version when no version is specified.
4. For multiple drawings, use CAXA's Bulk File Translation or batch-conversion function if it is included in the installed edition. Select the EXB source folder, set DWG as the output format, and write the results to a separate folder. The exact command name and availability vary by CAXA release, so test one file before processing a folder.
5. Open the resulting DWG in the target CAD application. Check units, scale, fonts, line types, layers, blocks, dimensions, paper-space layouts, and any proxy objects before delivery.

If CAXA cannot open the file, obtain the matching CAXA version or ask the file author to export DWG or DXF. A service that advertises generic EXB conversion is not a substitute for the CAXA application.

Handle an Evernote EXB file

Evernote EXB databases do not have a meaningful direct DWG conversion. The practical process is to extract the actual drawing or document from the note, then convert that content.

1. Close Evernote and copy the complete database folder or EXB file. Common Legacy Windows locations include %APPDATA%\Evernote\Databases\, but locations differ by version and installation.
2. Open the database with the Evernote installation that created it. Do not edit the database with a generic database tool or rename it.
3. Use File → Export Notes and export the relevant notes as ENEX or HTML. HTML is useful for readable files and attachments; ENEX is better for transferring structured Evernote note content.
4. Inspect the exported resources. If the note contains an original .dwg or .dxf attachment, extract and use that file; this is file recovery, not conversion.
5. For a vector PDF, use AutoCAD's Insert → PDF Import or the PDFIMPORT command, review the imported geometry, and save the drawing as DWG. An online service such as AutoDWG's PDF-to-DWG converter can be used for a non-confidential extracted PDF, but desktop import gives better control over scale and cleanup.
6. For a scanned plan or image, attach it with IMAGEATTACH and trace it manually, or use AutoCAD Raster Design or Scan2CAD for raster-to-vector processing. Verify dimensions against known measurements before saving.

Quality and compatibility limits

A CAXA export can lose unsupported entities, fonts, proxy objects, hatches, associative dimensions, 3D features, or layout settings. DWG version selection also affects what the recipient can open.

PDF import does not restore the original CAD structure. It may produce ordinary lines instead of constraints, blocks, layers, or associative dimensions; text recognition, scale, and line joins require inspection. Raster conversion cannot reliably recover the original vectors and may introduce inaccurate geometry.

There is no dependable online converter for an Evernote database or a general-purpose service that can interpret every CAXA EXB file. Keep private notes and attachments offline, and request the source DWG or DXF whenever accurate editable geometry is required.
