Convert NWD to DWG

AutoCAD, surveying, fabrication, and other CAD workflows require DWG when a coordination model must be edited, measured, plotted, or integrated with existing drawings. An NWD is usually a published review file rather than an editable source, so the most accurate result normally comes from obtaining the original DWG, RVT, or other authoring file.

What the NWD format is

NWD is Autodesk Navisworks’ published coordination format, created by Navisworks Manage or Navisworks Simulate. It packages a self-contained snapshot of aggregated models from sources such as Revit, AutoCAD, IFC, and Civil 3D, together with model properties and, depending on the publishing workflow, viewpoints, sectioning, appearance overrides, redlines, and review or clash data.

Navisworks Freedom can view NWD files but does not provide the authoring or export functions needed for this workflow. NWD differs from NWF: an NWF is a working Navisworks project that references external source files, while an NWD contains published model data. Publishing to NWD generally discards the source applications’ parametric structure and object relationships.

What the DWG format provides

DWG is AutoCAD’s native drawing format and is supported by many CAD, civil engineering, surveying, fabrication, and GIS applications. It can contain editable 2D entities, layers, blocks, text, dimensions, polylines, surfaces, solids, and 3D faces.

DWG is appropriate when users need to change geometry, extract coordinates, produce drawings, or run CAD automation. Geometry extracted from an NWD will usually be polygonal rather than native walls, beams, pipes, constraints, dimensions, blocks, or Revit objects.

Use the original authoring files

1. Ask the model author for the original DWG files, Revit RVT files, IFC files, or the NWF together with every referenced source file. An NWF without its references is not a substitute for the authoring data.
2. For an AutoCAD source, open the drawing and use Application menu → Save As or Output → Export to select the DWG version required by the recipient.
3. For a Revit source, open the required view or sheet and use File → Export → CAD Formats → DWG. Configure layers, units, coordinates, and export version before saving.
4. For an IFC or other source, export from the application that created or manages that data, or use a CAD/BIM application with a documented IFC-to-DWG workflow. This preserves more usable structure than extracting a published NWD.

Extract geometry when the NWD is the only file

Navisworks Manage or Navisworks Simulate can export scene geometry; Navisworks Freedom is not suitable. Product versions and licenses can change the available exporters.

1. Open the NWD and isolate the required items in the Selection Tree with selection sets or search sets. Exporting only the required discipline, zone, or equipment reduces conversion errors and file size.
2. Use Output → Export Scene → FBX and save the result as model.fbx. Check the export options offered by the installed Navisworks release.
3. Open Autodesk 3ds Max and import model.fbx through Application menu → Import → Import. Check units, orientation, coordinates, object extents, and unwanted objects.
4. Use Application menu → Export → Export in 3ds Max, choose the AutoCAD DWG exporter, and select a DWG version supported by the recipient’s CAD software. The exporter’s available 3D entity types depend on the geometry.
5. Open the resulting DWG in AutoCAD or another target CAD application. Verify insertion units, scale, coordinate position, layers, extents, face orientation, and model visibility; save again if a specific DWG release is required.

This is an extraction of display geometry, not restoration of the original CAD or BIM model. If the installed Navisworks release provides another documented geometry exporter compatible with the target workflow, it may replace FBX, but it will not restore native authoring objects.

Quality and compatibility limits

• There is no normal one-click NWD-to-DWG conversion that preserves the original model structure. DWG is editable, but an NWD does not contain enough source information to recreate the original CAD or BIM objects reliably.
• FBX-to-DWG workflows commonly produce 3D faces, faceted surfaces, or mesh-like geometry. They do not recreate editable polylines, blocks, parametric solids, Revit categories, constraints, native dimensions, or design history.
• Hidden objects, section planes, appearance overrides, viewpoints, clash tests, redlines, and other review metadata may not transfer to DWG. Exported geometry should not be treated as a complete review record.
• Confirm project coordinates and units before export. A model can appear correctly positioned in Navisworks while arriving in DWG with incorrect insertion units, scale, or origin.
• Large federated models can exceed practical DWG size or viewport limits. Split exports by discipline, building zone, floor, or selection set when necessary.
• No reputable general-purpose online service reliably converts proprietary NWD files into editable DWG. Services that claim to do so may reject the file, return only flattened geometry, or expose confidential project data during upload. Use the original files or a local Autodesk workflow instead.
