Convert NWD to NWF

Teams convert an .nwd publication to .nwf when they need a Navisworks working project that can retain review data and file references. The result is editable as a coordination setup, but it does not recover the original CAD or BIM authoring files.

What the NWD format is

NWD is Autodesk Navisworks’ published, self-contained coordination format. It packages federated model geometry, appearance, viewpoints, sectioning, and available review information into one file for design reviews, construction coordination, issue tracking, and archival snapshots.

Navisworks Manage and Navisworks Simulate create NWD files with File → Publish or File → Save As. An NWD can be inspected without access to the original CAD applications or source files, but it does not preserve editable DWG, RVT, IFC, or other native authoring structures and parameters.

What the NWF format is

NWF is Navisworks’ working coordination-project format. It stores references to appended model files together with project data such as viewpoints, section planes, appearance overrides, selection and search sets, measurements, and clash-test information.

Because model geometry remains in referenced files, an NWF is normally much smaller than an equivalent NWD and can reload updated source models. Its links depend on the referenced files and their paths, so an NWF is not a standalone replacement for an NWD.

How to convert NWD to NWF

1. Open the NWD in Autodesk Navisworks Manage or Navisworks Simulate. Navisworks Freedom can view NWD files but cannot create or save NWF projects.
2. Choose File → Open and select the source file, for example model.nwd.
3. Choose File → Save As.
4. Select Navisworks (*.nwf) as the file type, choose a destination, and save the project as model.nwf.
5. Reopen the NWF and verify that the NWD reference, viewpoints, saved sets, sectioning, and required review data are available.

If the NWF must coordinate live authoring models, the better workflow is to create it from those files rather than from the published NWD. Start a Navisworks project, use Home → Append to add the DWG, RVT, IFC, NWC, or other supported sources, then use File → Save As and select Navisworks (*.nwf). This preserves links to the actual source files; those links cannot be reconstructed from an NWD when the originals are unavailable.

Quality and compatibility limits

Saving an NWD as NWF changes the project container and reference arrangement; it is not a geometry or reverse-engineering conversion. It does not restore native CAD layers, editable BIM objects, parametric elements, materials, object properties, or application metadata that were omitted when the NWD was published.

An NWF created from an NWD may reference that NWD as its external model file. Keep the NWD at the expected path, preserve relative paths when moving the project, or resolve missing files through Navisworks’ file-location prompts. Test the result on the target Navisworks release because files saved by newer releases may not open in older versions.

No reputable general-purpose online converter reliably creates a functional NWF from an NWD. An online CAD converter may extract or translate geometry, but it cannot reproduce Navisworks’ working-file references and coordination settings. Use Navisworks Manage or Simulate on a controlled desktop system, and avoid uploading confidential project models to third-party services.
