Convert DGN to DWG

A consultant or client may require an AutoCAD-compatible drawing for editing, coordination, plotting, or document management. Converting the source preserves usable CAD geometry in DWG, but dependent files and specialized design data must be checked afterward.

What the DGN format is

DGN is Bentley Systems' CAD format, used extensively for roads, railways, utilities, surveying, plant design, buildings, and other infrastructure projects. Bentley MicroStation, OpenRoads, OpenBuildings, OpenUtilities, and related applications create and edit DGN-based project data.

DGN supports 2D and 3D models, levels, cells, references, line styles, annotation, and complex elements. A file can depend on external reference drawings, fonts, resource files, and cell libraries; these dependencies may not be embedded in the main DGN.

What the DWG format is

DWG is Autodesk AutoCAD's native drawing format and is supported by AutoCAD-based products such as Civil 3D, Map 3D, and Architecture. It is commonly required for editing, coordination, estimating, plotting, and delivery to organizations using Autodesk software.

DWG stores 2D and 3D geometry, layers, blocks, dimensions, text, layouts, and, depending on the application, object data. The DWG version can be selected during export or saving so the file matches the recipient's AutoCAD release; older releases may not open newer DWG versions.

How to convert a DGN file to DWG

Using MicroStation

1. Open the DGN in MicroStation and confirm that required reference files are attached and displayed.
2. Check the active model, units, coordinate system, levels, fonts, line styles, and 3D content.
3. Choose File → Save As and select an AutoCAD Drawing format such as DWG.
4. Choose the required DWG version, output filename, and destination.
5. Review the available conversion settings. Map levels to layers, define how cells become blocks, and set options for units, references, fonts, and line styles where provided.
6. Open the result in AutoCAD or another compatible CAD application and inspect geometry, text, dimensions, layouts, and references.

MicroStation is generally the safest choice for DGN files containing Bentley-specific elements, complex cells, engineering data, or several reference attachments because it reads the source format directly. Menu names and export settings vary by MicroStation edition. Use Bentley's batch conversion tools for multiple files when the project requires consistent settings.

Using AutoCAD

1. Use a full AutoCAD installation that includes DGN import; viewers and some AutoCAD-based products may not provide it. Supported DGN versions and import options depend on the AutoCAD release.
2. Run DGNIMPORT, or use Insert → Import → DGN when that menu is available.
3. Select the DGN and configure the import settings for units, levels, references, line styles, text, and cells.
4. Inspect the imported drawing in model space. Correct missing fonts, unloaded references, incorrect units, and elements converted to proxy or basic geometry.
5. Choose File → Save As, select DWG, choose the required DWG version, and save the drawing.

AutoCAD is useful when the converted drawing must be cleaned, checked, or edited immediately in an Autodesk environment. Civil 3D or Map 3D may be more suitable for civil or GIS-related content, but neither guarantees preservation of specialized Bentley objects.

Using an online converter

Services such as CloudConvert and Zamzar may offer DGN-to-DWG conversion, but supported DGN versions, file sizes, output DWG versions, and available settings can change. If the service lists the required formats, upload a copy, select DWG, download the result, and verify it in desktop CAD software.

Do not upload confidential plans, utility layouts, security-sensitive infrastructure drawings, or client-controlled files unless the provider's processing, retention, deletion, and privacy terms permit it. Online services usually provide fewer controls for references, cells, fonts, coordinate systems, and engineering objects than MicroStation or AutoCAD.

Quality and compatibility checks

• References: attached DGN references may become separate DWG files, blocks, overlays, or flattened geometry. Transfer every dependency and reconnect paths after conversion.
• Levels and layers: DGN levels normally map to DWG layers, but names, symbology, overrides, and visibility states may change.
• Cells and blocks: cells commonly become DWG blocks, but nested cells, annotation cells, parametric cells, and custom behavior may be simplified.
• Fonts and line styles: missing SHX, TrueType, MicroStation font, or resource files can change text spacing, symbols, line patterns, and plotted appearance.
• 3D and engineering objects: solids, terrain, civil objects, constraints, metadata, and application-specific elements may become generic geometry or be discarded. A visual match does not prove that editable design intelligence was preserved.
• Units and coordinates: verify master and subunits, insertion scale, survey coordinates, and the coordinate system. An incorrect setting can scale the drawing by factors of 10, 100, or 1,000 or place it incorrectly.
• Validation: compare critical dimensions, coordinates, layer visibility, plotted sheets, and design geometry with the original DGN before issuing the DWG.
