How to convert prt to stp

The best method is usually to use the original CAD application that created the PRT file, because it can export the model with the highest fidelity.

3. Use the export command, typically File → Save As, File → Export, or File → Save a Copy.
4. Select STEP as the output format.

6. Save the converted file and verify it by reopening the STEP file in a viewer or another CAD program.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

PRT is not one universal format, so the conversion method depends on which CAD system created the file. A PRT file from Creo may not open correctly in software intended for Solid Edge or NX. If the file is native to the wrong platform, you may need the original application or a translator that supports that specific PRT variant.

When converting to STEP, parametric history, sketches, constraints, and feature trees are usually lost. STEP typically preserves the final solid geometry and sometimes colors, layers, and assembly structure, but it is not meant to retain editable CAD intelligence. If the model contains surfaces, imported geometry, or complex assemblies, check the exported STEP carefully for missing faces, gaps, or tolerance issues.

For best results, use the latest STEP standard supported by your recipient, often AP242 for modern exchange workflows. If the goal is downstream editing in another CAD system, STEP is usually the right choice; if the goal is long-term native editing, keep the original PRT file as well.

Important: There is no reliable universal one-click online converter for every PRT file, because the extension can refer to different proprietary CAD formats.
