How to convert ipt to stp file

A supplier, CAM system, or downstream CAD application may require a neutral STEP model instead of an Autodesk Inventor part. Converting the file transfers its solid geometry to software that cannot open native Inventor files.

What the IPT format is

.ipt is Autodesk Inventor’s native part format. It can contain a single part’s parametric feature history, sketches, constraints, construction geometry, solid and surface bodies, appearances, materials, and Inventor-specific metadata. Inventor assemblies normally use .iam, while drawings use .idw or .dwg.

IPT files are used mainly in Inventor-based product design, manufacturing, supplier, and engineering workflows. The file may depend on linked or derived design data, so missing references can affect the model before export.

What the STP format is

.stp and .step are filename extensions for ISO 10303 STEP, a neutral CAD exchange format. Major CAD, CAM, inspection, and 3D-printing applications can import STEP, including SolidWorks, CATIA, Siemens NX, PTC Creo, Fusion, FreeCAD, and many viewers.

STEP generally transfers precise boundary-representation solids and surfaces rather than Inventor’s feature tree. It is used for manufacturing handoff, supplier exchange, inspection, archiving, and opening a model in another CAD system without Autodesk Inventor.

Convert with Autodesk Inventor

  1. Open the .ipt file in Autodesk Inventor and let linked or derived design data load.
  2. Check for missing references, suppressed or failed features, unwanted construction geometry, and invalid solids. Repair failures before exporting.
  3. Use File → Export → CAD Format. Depending on the Inventor release, File → Save As → Save Copy As can also be used to select STEP.
  4. Choose STEP or STP as the output type, specify the destination, and open the STEP export options.
  5. Choose the protocol supported by the recipient. AP214 is widely accepted by older systems; AP242 is suitable when both applications support it. Do not select a newer protocol solely because it is available.
  6. Set the required units and other geometry options, export the file, then open the result in a separate viewer or the receiving CAD system.

Inventor is usually the safest converter because it reads the native IPT data directly. For repeated jobs, Inventor automation through iLogic or its API can open parts and invoke STEP export, but scripts must match the installed Inventor release and translator options.

Use another desktop converter

CAD Exchanger Desktop can import supported Autodesk Inventor part versions and export STEP without requiring Inventor. Check its current format and version support before purchasing or processing a batch, then open the IPT, choose STEP as the export format, select the required protocol and units, and verify the exported model. A third-party translator is less suitable when the file contains unsupported Inventor features, external references, or geometry that must be repaired before conversion.

Use an online converter

CAD Exchanger Cloud is a browser-based option when its current support list accepts the particular IPT version and provides STEP export. Upload the file, select STEP, choose AP214 or AP242 if offered and compatible with the recipient, then download and inspect the result.

Online conversion sends proprietary design data to an external service. Do not upload confidential or export-controlled models without approval; check retention, deletion, access, and file-size policies first. Online services may also impose limits on assemblies, linked files, feature types, or large models.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • STEP normally preserves solid and surface geometry, but not Inventor feature history, sketches, constraints, iFeatures, editable parameters, or design intent. The recipient will usually edit the imported body with direct-modeling tools or recreate features.
  • An IPT normally represents one part, including a possible multi-body part. To exchange an Inventor assembly and its component structure, export the .iam assembly when the chosen translator supports assembly STEP output; do not expect a part export to recreate assembly relationships.
  • Colors and basic appearances may transfer. Textures, decals, Inventor materials, drawings, tolerances, annotations, custom properties, and other metadata may be lost or translated incompletely.
  • After import, compare units, bounding dimensions, hole diameters, threads, fillets, critical faces, and body count. Inspect for missing faces, gaps, open shells, self-intersections, or trimmed-surface errors.
  • For manufacturing, use a valid solid rather than a tessellated mesh and ask the recipient which STEP protocol, units, and geometry tolerances its CAD or CAM system requires. STL is not an equivalent substitute when exact, editable CAD geometry is needed.
