A receiving CAD system may require Parasolid geometry instead of an Autodesk Inventor part, particularly when exchanging models with Siemens NX, Solid Edge, SolidWorks, or another Parasolid-compatible application. Exporting creates transferable solid geometry, but it does not retain Inventor’s feature tree or parametric design history.
What the IPT format is
.ipt is Autodesk Inventor’s native part format. It can contain parametric features, sketches, constraints, work features, solid or surface bodies, materials, appearances, and document properties. Inventor stores assemblies separately, normally in .iam files.
IPT files are used primarily in Inventor-based mechanical design, manufacturing, supplier exchanges, and native CAD archives. Autodesk Inventor is the most reliable application for opening an IPT with its original design history; third-party translators usually import only the evaluated geometry.
What the X_T format is
.x_t is the text-based Parasolid exchange format. It stores boundary-representation geometry, including solid bodies, faces, edges, curves, and surfaces, for transfer between compatible CAD applications.
Unlike a mesh format, X_T can preserve precise analytic geometry suitable for measurement, downstream solid operations, and manufacturing workflows. The text is human-readable only as file encoding; it is not practical to edit manually. Parasolid’s binary equivalent is .x_b, which may be smaller or faster to process. Changing an extension from .x_t to .x_b does not convert the file.
How to convert the file
Autodesk Inventor is the preferred option when the IPT opens correctly and the installed release provides Parasolid export:
- Open the IPT in Inventor and resolve any missing references or failed features.
- Check the bodies intended for export. Suppressed, hidden, excluded, or construction-only geometry may not appear in the result.
- Use File → Save As → Save Copy As.
- Select
Parasolid Text (*.x_t), or the equivalent Parasolid text option shown by your Inventor release. - Choose a destination and save the copy without replacing the original IPT.
- Open the X_T in the destination CAD system and verify units, body count, critical dimensions, holes, fillets, and mating faces with its geometry-check or validation tool.
Menu names and available Parasolid versions vary by Inventor release and installation. If the recipient accepts binary Parasolid, export Parasolid Binary (*.x_b) instead.
CAD Exchanger Desktop is a suitable alternative when Inventor is unavailable, provided the installed version supports the particular IPT version. Import the IPT, inspect the detected bodies and units, then use File → Export and select Parasolid X_T. CAD Exchanger Cloud offers the same type of conversion through a browser when its current format support includes the source version. A cloud service uploads the model to an external system, so use it only when company security and contractual requirements allow external processing.
Compatibility and quality limits
The export transfers evaluated B-rep geometry, not Inventor’s native feature tree. Sketches, constraints, parameters, feature order, model states, assembly relationships, iProperties, drawing annotations, and most Inventor-specific appearance data are not represented in the Parasolid file. The recipient normally gets imported bodies that can be measured and directly edited, rather than the original parametric model.
A multi-body IPT may become several Parasolid bodies. The receiving application may preserve them separately or combine them according to its import settings. Surface-only, self-intersecting, or defective bodies may require healing before or after export. Check that every required body is visible and included before saving.
Parasolid kernel-version compatibility depends on the destination application. If it rejects the file, export with an older Parasolid version when the source tool provides that option, or request STEP as a fallback. Keep the IPT as the authoritative source and compare critical dimensions after import because topology changes can affect face references, downstream fillets, holes, and manufacturing operations.
