Convert SCR to PDF

A Windows screen saver is an executable program, not a document, so a PDF is usually needed only to record its appearance or document its code and settings. A verified image or text file using the .scr extension may instead need PDF for sharing, printing, or archiving.

What the SCR format is

.scr most commonly identifies a Windows screen saver. A screen saver is normally a Portable Executable (PE) program installed in locations such as C:/Windows/System32; Windows can launch it with parameters including /s for full-screen mode and /c for configuration.

Other software also uses .scr for scripts, screen captures, CAD data, or proprietary project files. The extension does not establish the file type. On Windows, inspect the first bytes with PowerShell:

An initial 4D 5A signature, displayed as MZ, indicates a Windows executable. Do not run an unknown SCR file merely to identify it; scan it with Microsoft Defender or another current antivirus product, and use an isolated virtual machine when its source is uncertain.

What the PDF format is

PDF stores fixed-layout pages containing text, raster images, vector graphics, and some interactive elements. It preserves page appearance across operating systems and is suitable for printing, email distribution, and archival copies.

PDF cannot preserve a screen saver’s executable behavior, animation logic, or interactive configuration. It can preserve a screenshot, extracted source text, installation instructions, or other static information associated with the SCR file.

How to convert a Windows screen saver

1. Verify and scan the file before opening it. Do not upload an unknown executable to an online conversion service.
2. Run a known screen saver in an isolated environment or from Command Prompt with its full path, for example "C:/path/sample.scr" /s.
3. Capture the required frame with a screenshot tool. Windows Snipping Tool may dismiss a full-screen screen saver when you interact with it, so a keyboard screenshot shortcut, a virtual-machine host capture, or another screen-capture utility may be more reliable.
4. Save the capture as PNG to avoid JPEG artifacts. Open it in Photos, a web browser, or another image viewer, choose Print, select Microsoft Print to PDF, set the paper size and orientation, and save the PDF.

Animated screen savers can produce different frames on each run. Capture each required view separately and combine the PDFs with Adobe Acrobat’s Combine Files command or PDFsam Basic.

How to convert SCR source code or text

If format identification shows that the file is readable source code or a script rather than a PE executable, open it as text without executing it in Notepad, Notepad++, or Visual Studio Code. Use the editor’s Print command and select Microsoft Print to PDF. A monospaced font, line numbers, wider margins, and landscape orientation help preserve long lines.

For searchable and selectable text, print the source directly instead of taking screenshots. The resulting PDF still documents the source; it does not preserve the script’s ability to run.

How to handle an image or proprietary SCR file

Identify the actual format before choosing a converter. TrID and the Unix file sample.scr command can identify many formats; on Windows, a hexadecimal signature viewer can also reveal the file type. ImageMagick can test an image with:

magick identify sample.scr

Only if ImageMagick recognizes the file should you try:

magick sample.scr output.pdf

For a proprietary format, open the file in the application that created it and use Export or Print → PDF. If that application has no PDF output, export to a supported image or document format first, then create the PDF.

Online converters and limitations

CloudConvert and Convertio can be used for a confirmed, supported non-executable image or document variant, but they may reject an SCR file or interpret it incorrectly. Check the service’s supported formats before uploading, and do not send confidential files or Windows executables to a third party.

A screenshot-based PDF contains pixels rather than real text, so it is not searchable, accessible, or suitable for high-quality text reflow. Use the original source or a rendered document when text selection, accessibility, or reliable printing is required. Preserve the original SCR separately because the PDF is only a static representation.
