Convert TGZ to PDF

A program, printer, records system, or recipient may require a fixed-layout PDF instead of a compressed archive. Because TGZ is only a container, the required task is to extract its contents and convert the relevant document, image, or text file to PDF.

What the TGZ format is

TGZ combines a TAR archive with GZIP compression; .tgz and .tar.gz are equivalent extensions. It stores files and folders but does not define how they should be displayed as pages. Linux and Unix software commonly uses TGZ for source-code packages, backups, logs, datasets, and software distributions.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a fixed-layout document format that can contain text, images, fonts, links, and print settings. It is suitable for sharing, printing, and archiving reports, manuals, invoices, and scanned pages because the page appearance is usually consistent across operating systems. Fonts and other resources are preserved only when they are embedded or otherwise available to the PDF viewer, and PDF is not a general replacement for an archive’s directory structure or arbitrary file types.

How to convert the contents

1. Inspect and extract the archive

To list files without extracting them on macOS or Linux, run:

tar -tzf package.tgz

To extract the archive, run:

tar -xzf package.tgz

On Windows, install 7-Zip, right-click the file, and choose 7-Zip → Extract Here or 7-Zip → Extract to folder. Some versions expose the GZIP and TAR layers separately, so extract the resulting .tar file as a second step if necessary. If the archive already contains PDF files, extracting those files completes the task; no PDF conversion is required.

2. Select the source file

Examine the extracted folders for files such as DOCX, ODT, XLSX, PPTX, HTML, Markdown, TXT, JPG, and PNG. Convert the relevant source files individually rather than treating the entire directory tree as one document. A TGZ containing source code, logs, or unrelated data has no single natural PDF equivalent.

3. Create the PDF

For DOCX, ODT, spreadsheets, and presentations, LibreOffice supports Windows, macOS, and Linux. Open the file and choose File → Export as PDF. For automated conversion, use:

soffice --headless --convert-to pdf --outdir output extracted-file.docx

Replace the input filename and extension as required. Complex fonts, macros, embedded objects, charts, and advanced Microsoft Office layout can change during conversion.

For Markdown, Pandoc can generate a PDF when a suitable LaTeX installation is installed:

pandoc README.md -o README.pdf

For HTML or plain text, open the file in a browser or editor and choose Print → Save as PDF. For JPG or PNG files, use the operating system’s print dialog, Preview on macOS, or an image editor with PDF export. Multiple images can be placed into one PDF, but their order, page size, and image resolution must be configured.

Online conversion options

Extract the TGZ locally before uploading anything. CloudConvert and Zamzar can convert common contained document and image formats to PDF through a browser; upload the selected file, choose PDF as the output, and download the result. Do not upload confidential records, credentials, proprietary source code, or archives containing unknown files unless the service’s retention, processing, and deletion terms are acceptable.

Quality and compatibility limits

Install the fonts used by the source document and check the generated PDF’s page size, orientation, margins, page breaks, hyperlinks, images, and text selection. Password-protected, damaged, nested, or partially downloaded archives must be unlocked, repaired, or extracted at the appropriate level before conversion. Keep the original TGZ when it is the archival copy; a PDF may omit metadata, permissions, executable files, directory structure, or editable source content.

For scanned pages, the initial PDF may contain only images. Run OCRmyPDF on that image-based PDF, with its required OCR dependencies installed, to add a searchable text layer:
