Convert LAY6 to PDF

A PCB layout may need to be sent to a fabricator, reviewer, or print shop that does not use Sprint-Layout. A PDF provides a fixed, printable view of the board without exposing the editable layout file.

What LAY6 files contain

LAY6 is the native PCB-layout format used by Sprint-Layout 6, a Windows PCB design application from Abacom. It stores board geometry such as copper tracks, pads, vias, component outlines, text, board edges, and layer assignments.

A .lay6 file is an editable design, not a standard document or image. It should not be confused with Tecplot layout files, which normally use the .lay extension and require different software.

Why use PDF

PDF is a fixed-page format supported by browsers, Adobe Acrobat Reader, operating-system preview tools, and print workflows. A PDF can retain vector paths and text when Sprint-Layout and the selected PDF output driver produce vector print output, allowing clean scaling for inspection and printing.

The PDF is not suitable for editing copper tracks, changing layer assignments, or generating Gerber and drill files. Keep the original .lay6 file for later PCB changes.

Convert with Sprint-Layout

1. Open the board in Sprint-Layout 6 with File → Open.
2. Check the layout before output: confirm the board outline, text, holes, scale, and visible layers. Hide layers that should not appear in the PDF.
3. Set the required paper size and orientation, and verify that print scaling is 100% when the PDF will be used as a drilling, etching, or transfer template. Do not use fit-to-page scaling for dimensionally accurate output.
4. Use File → Print. On Windows, select Microsoft Print to PDF; Adobe Acrobat users can select Adobe PDF. Choose the output filename, such as board.pdf, and save it.
5. If the installed Sprint-Layout version explicitly provides File → Export → PDF, use that option instead of a virtual printer and review the generated file in a PDF viewer.

Print a test page at actual size and measure a known pad spacing or board dimension before using the PDF for physical production. Printer dialogs, PDF drivers, and viewer print settings can apply scaling even when the layout itself is correct.

Compatibility and quality limits

Use Sprint-Layout 6 for a LAY6 file whenever possible. Later compatible releases may open older layouts, but verify pad shapes, fonts, layer visibility, and dimensions after opening the file.

PDF output reflects the layers and colors visible at print time. A single PDF page does not preserve Sprint-Layout layer editability; create separate PDFs when copper, silkscreen, drill, or mechanical layers must be reviewed independently.

A PDF printer may rasterize the page, especially with transparency, color effects, or driver-specific settings. Zoom into the saved PDF and check that fine tracks, pad holes, and small labels remain sharp. Do not rely on generic online converters for LAY6 files: there is no broadly supported reputable web converter that can reliably interpret Sprint-Layout's proprietary layout data, and uploading board designs can expose confidential engineering information.
