JPEG images must be placed inside a GTA texture dictionary before they can be used as vehicle skins, character textures, signs, or other game assets. TXD is not a general image format: it is a RenderWare texture-dictionary file used by games such as Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, and San Andreas.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG is a lossy raster-image format commonly created by Photoshop, GIMP, Paint.NET, image viewers, screenshot tools, and phone or camera software. It stores full-color images efficiently, but it does not preserve editable layers and normally does not contain an alpha channel for transparency. GTA modding tools can read JPEG files as source images, although game textures are often prepared as PNG or BMP first when transparency is required.

What the TXD format is

TXD means a RenderWare texture dictionary in the computer-games context. A TXD contains one or more named textures, their dimensions, color format, mipmaps, and sometimes alpha data; the game loads those textures by name from the dictionary rather than opening a JPEG directly.

TXD files are used by RenderWare-era GTA games, especially GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas, for textures assigned to models, maps, vehicles, weapons, menus, and effects. The dictionary can store game-compatible compressed formats such as DXT1 or DXT3/5, reducing memory use compared with an uncompressed image. The correct TXD version and platform settings depend on the target game.

How to actually convert JPEG to TXD

Magic.TXD is a suitable desktop tool for creating and editing GTA texture dictionaries. The process is an import operation: the JPEG becomes a named texture entry inside a new or existing TXD.

  1. Install and open Magic.TXD, then choose File → New to create a dictionary, or open an existing TXD that should receive the image.
  2. Use the texture import command, commonly available through Texture → Import or the texture-list context menu, and select image.jpg.
  3. Set the texture name to the exact name expected by the model or game resource. Texture references are often case-sensitive or limited in length; a filename alone may not be the correct in-game name.
  4. Choose the target game/platform profile when the program asks for it. For opaque artwork, DXT1 or a supported 32-bit format is typical; use an alpha-capable format such as DXT3, DXT5, or an uncompressed 32-bit format only when the texture needs transparency.
  5. Generate mipmaps if the target game or tool supports them and the texture will be viewed at different distances.
  6. Save the dictionary with File → Save As, using a filename such as custom.txd. Replace the game resource only after making a backup.

TXD Workshop can perform the same basic operation for compatible GTA versions: create or open a TXD, choose Import, select the JPEG, rename the texture entry, choose the required raster format, and save the TXD. Magic.TXD generally provides better support for newer TXD variants and texture properties.

If you use 101convert.com, its free online converter can perform the conversion without installing software when the TXD option and required game profile are available. Verify that the resulting dictionary contains the expected texture name and game-compatible raster format before installing it in a mod.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

JPEG decoding followed by TXD compression can reduce quality twice: JPEG has already discarded image information, and DXT compression can add block artifacts. Use the highest-quality source JPEG available, avoid repeated JPEG saves, and inspect the texture in the game rather than judging only the exported file.

Many GTA engines and tools work most reliably with power-of-two dimensions such as 256×256, 512×512, or 1024×1024. Non-power-of-two images may be resized, rejected, or display incorrectly. Resize before importing when the target game has a known texture-size limit.

A JPEG cannot supply transparent pixels. If the texture requires windows, fences, decals, or cutout foliage, prepare a PNG or another source containing an alpha channel and import that instead. A TXD made for one GTA game or platform may not load in another because dictionary versions, raster formats, naming rules, and compression support differ.
