What the WEBP format is

WEBP is an image format created by Google and commonly produced by web browsers, image editors, asset pipelines, and download tools. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animated images, so game mod archives or texture reference pages may contain WEBP source files even when the game itself does not read WEBP.

WEBP is not a RenderWare texture dictionary. A WEBP file normally contains one standalone image; it does not contain the texture names, mipmaps, raster format, or collection structure expected inside a TXD file.

What the TXD format is

TXD is the RenderWare Texture Dictionary format used by games including Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. A TXD stores one or more named textures together with image dimensions, color format, alpha information, filtering data, and often mipmaps.

TXD is useful for game textures because the engine can load a complete named texture collection from one dictionary. The format also supports platform-specific texture compression such as DXT1, DXT3, and DXT5, which reduces memory use compared with uncompressed images.

How to actually convert WEBP to TXD

The reliable workflow is WEBP → PNG → TXD. Use ImageMagick for the image conversion and Magic.TXD for the RenderWare import.

1. Install ImageMagick and Magic.TXD on a desktop system.
2. Convert the source while retaining transparency:

magick input.webp -alpha on output.png

For a batch of files, use a separate output name for each image; the filename does not automatically become the texture name required by the game.

3. Open Magic.TXD and create a new texture dictionary through File → New.
4. Import output.png through Texture → Import or by using the program's image import control.
5. Set the imported texture's name to the exact name referenced by the game's model, material, or replacement mod. Texture names are commonly case-sensitive in modding tools and must not include the file extension.
6. Choose a raster format. Use DXT1 when the image has no transparency, DXT3 for sharp or binary alpha, DXT5 for smoother transparency, or 32-bit ARGB when preserving image data is more important than memory usage.
7. Enable mipmap generation if the target game or mod normally uses mipmaps. Save the dictionary with File → Save as, using a .txd filename.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Converting WEBP to PNG does not restore detail discarded by lossy WEBP compression. Importing the PNG into DXT1, DXT3, or DXT5 can introduce another compression loss, so keep a lossless original when editing repeatedly.

Use texture dimensions accepted by the target game, preferably powers of two such as 256×256, 512×512, or 1024×1024. Some older RenderWare engines or tools reject unusual dimensions, oversized textures, unsupported color depths, or TXD files saved for the wrong game/platform version.

WEBP animation is not represented by a normal TXD texture. A converter generally imports only one frame; animated artwork must be split into frames and handled by a game-specific animation system.

A valid TXD can still fail in-game if its texture name does not match the model material, if the dictionary is not placed where the game expects it, or if the selected alpha and compression format is incompatible with the target engine.
