A TXD file is required when a game using RenderWare textures, such as Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, must load an image as an in-game texture. Converting the GIF first to a supported raster image and then importing it into a TXD dictionary avoids the palette, animation, and compression problems that direct conversion can cause.

What the GIF format is

GIF is an indexed raster-image format commonly created by image editors, web browsers, screen-capture tools, and animation software. It supports palettes of up to 256 colors per frame, one transparent color, and multiple frames with timing data. In computer games, GIF files usually appear as source artwork, mod assets, interface images, or extracted references rather than as the final texture format.

What the TXD format is

TXD is a RenderWare Texture Dictionary used by games including several Grand Theft Auto titles. A TXD dictionary stores one or more named textures, their dimensions, transparency information, filtering settings, mipmaps, and often compressed texture data.

TXD is useful because the game can load a collection of named textures from one game-specific resource. It is not a general image format: a TXD made for one RenderWare game or engine version may not work in another, and the file normally needs a texture name matching the model or material that references it.

How to actually convert GIF to TXD

  1. Check the target game. Confirm whether it uses RenderWare TXD files and identify its expected texture dimensions, naming rules, and TXD version. For GTA modding, Magic.TXD is generally preferable to older TXD Workshop releases.
  2. Extract a usable frame from the GIF. A TXD texture is normally a single image, so an animated GIF must be reduced to one frame unless the game has a separate animated-texture system. With ImageMagick, export the first frame as PNG using magick input.gif[0] -coalesce output.png. Replace input.gif and output.png with the actual filenames.
  3. Preserve transparency when required. If the GIF uses a transparent color, inspect the exported PNG and correct its alpha channel in an editor before importing it. GIF transparency is binary; semitransparent edges cannot be recovered from the original palette.
  4. Create or open the dictionary in Magic.TXD. Use File → New for a new TXD or File → Open to edit an existing dictionary. Add or import output.png as a texture, then set the texture name exactly as required by the model or game asset.
  5. Set texture options. Choose the target raster format, enable mipmaps if the game expects them, and select an alpha-capable format for transparent artwork. DXT1 is suitable for opaque textures or simple binary transparency; DXT3 or DXT5 is more suitable when the game and asset require graded alpha.
  6. Save the dictionary. Save it as the game’s required .txd file, replace the original only after making a backup, and test the asset in the game or modding tool. The same procedure applies when adding several GIF-derived PNGs: import each image as a separately named texture in the dictionary.

You can also use the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software if its available conversion option supports this specific game texture format. Verify the resulting texture names and TXD compatibility in a desktop TXD editor before using the file in a game.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

  • Animation is not preserved automatically. A normal TXD entry represents a texture, not a GIF timeline. Export one frame or create separate named textures only if the game’s scripting or animation system can switch between them.
  • GIF’s 256-color palette can produce banding, color loss, and jagged transparent edges. If the source artwork is available in PNG, TGA, or another full-color format, use that source instead of converting the GIF.
  • Use dimensions supported by the target game, commonly powers of two such as 256×256, 512×512, or 1024×1024. Some newer tools and games accept other dimensions, but older RenderWare pipelines may resize, reject, or display them incorrectly.
  • Texture compression reduces file size and improves runtime compatibility but can create block artifacts, especially around text and alpha edges. Keep an uncompressed or lossless source copy and reimport it if the selected DXT format produces visible damage.
  • Do not rename only the file extension. A PNG or GIF renamed to .txd is still not a RenderWare texture dictionary and will not load as one.
