A game mod may require a RenderWare texture dictionary instead of a standalone TIFF image, especially for Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, or San Andreas. Converting the image lets a texture editor package it into a .txd file that the game can load.

What the TIFF format is

TIFF (.tif or .tiff) is a raster-image format used for high-quality source artwork, scanned material, and texture editing. Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, Krita, image scanners, and asset pipelines can create TIFF files. TIFF supports lossless compression, multiple color depths, and alpha channels, but game engines generally do not load it directly as a runtime texture.

What the TXD format is

In computer games, TXD means RenderWare Texture Dictionary. It is a binary container used by RenderWare-based games, including the PC versions of Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, and San Andreas, to store named textures and their mipmaps. A TXD can contain several related images, such as vehicle body, wheel, and interior textures, rather than one generic picture.

TXD files are useful because the game can locate textures by their internal names and load a dictionary associated with a model or map. The required TXD variant depends on the game, platform, RenderWare version, color format, and texture dimensions; renaming a TIFF file to .txd does not perform a conversion.

How to actually convert TIFF to TXD

  1. Install Magic.TXD, a desktop TXD editor that supports RenderWare texture dictionaries. Select the target game or platform settings when the program provides them.
  2. Convert the TIFF to a game-friendly intermediate image if Magic.TXD does not accept TIFF directly. ImageMagick can create a PNG with:
    magick input.tif -auto-orient -alpha on output.png
For a multipage TIFF, select a page explicitly, for example input.tif[0].
  3. Open Magic.TXD and create a new texture dictionary, or open the existing TXD that the replacement texture belongs to.
  4. Import output.png into the dictionary. Set the texture's internal name to exactly match the name referenced by the model or game files; names are often case-sensitive or convention-sensitive.
  5. Set the raster format and alpha handling for the target game. Use an alpha-capable format for transparency, and generate mipmaps when the original TXD uses them. Keep dimensions at commonly supported power-of-two sizes such as 64×64, 128×128, 256×256, or 512×512 unless the game accepts other dimensions.
  6. Save the dictionary with the correct .txd filename and replace or install it according to the game's mod directory structure. Keep a backup of the original file.

For a no-installation conversion, the free converter on 101convert.com can be used when it supports the required game-specific TXD variant. Verify the resulting dictionary in a TXD editor before placing it in the game, because a file with the right extension may still use the wrong platform or raster format.

Quality and compatibility limitations

TIFF may contain 16-bit or 32-bit color, CMYK data, layers, multiple pages, or unusual compression, while RenderWare textures generally require a single flattened image in a supported RGB or RGBA format. Flatten layers and convert CMYK or high-bit-depth data to 8-bit RGB/RGBA before import.

Transparency can fail if the alpha channel is discarded or if the game expects a specific alpha convention. Check the imported texture in Magic.TXD and test it in the target game. A TXD created for one RenderWare game or platform is not automatically compatible with another, even when both games use the same extension.
