Document-management, scanning, and publishing systems may require a TIFF image instead of an HTML page. Converting the page to TIFF creates a fixed visual rendering for printing, archiving, or importing into image-based workflows.

What the HTML format is

HTML (HyperText Markup Language) is the markup format used by browsers to display structured content such as headings, tables, images, links, forms, and CSS-styled layouts. Web developers, content-management systems, web editors, office applications, and browsers use files with the .html or .htm extension.

HTML does not define a fixed page size or one guaranteed appearance. The result depends on the browser, viewport width, installed fonts, linked CSS, images, JavaScript, and print settings. A local HTML file may also depend on separate images, stylesheets, or fonts.

What the TIF format is

TIF, also written TIFF, is a raster image format used for scanned documents, desktop publishing, records management, medical imaging, photography, and print production. It supports monochrome, grayscale, and color images at high resolution, along with lossless compression methods such as LZW and ZIP.

TIFF is appropriate when the receiving device or application accepts image files instead of web documents, or when a fixed rendering must be archived. It does not retain HTML links, responsive behavior, forms, JavaScript, or editable page structure. A TIFF is often much larger than the original HTML and its associated assets.

Convert through a browser and PDF

A browser-to-PDF step gives you control over paper size and print layout before rasterization.

1. Open the HTML file in Chrome or Microsoft Edge and confirm that all required resources have loaded.
2. Open the browser’s Print dialog. Set the paper size, orientation, margins, scale, headers, and footers. Enable background graphics if the design uses CSS background colors or images.
3. Select Save to PDF and save the rendered page as page.pdf.
4. Rasterize the PDF at the required resolution. With Poppler installed, run pdftoppm -r 300 -tiff page.pdf page. This creates one TIFF per PDF page, such as page-1.tif.
5. To combine the page images into one multipage TIFF with ImageMagick, run magick page-*.tif -compress LZW output.tif. Check the input order first if filenames do not sort numerically.

Adobe Acrobat Pro can replace the command-line rasterization step: open the PDF and select File → Export To → Image → TIFF. The PDF remains an intermediate representation; the exported TIFF is still a raster image.

Resolution and compatibility limits

• Use 300 DPI for ordinary printed documents, 150 DPI for screen-oriented output, or 600 DPI for very small text, line art, and demanding print workflows. Increasing DPI increases pixel dimensions, file size, and processing time.
• Use print CSS, such as @media print rules, when you control the source and need predictable page breaks, margins, or hidden navigation elements. The browser’s print layout is more suitable than its normal responsive screen view for document output.
• Web fonts, remote images, JavaScript-generated content, animations, video, and interactive controls may be missing or rendered differently when the HTML is opened offline or processed by a converter.
• TIFF can contain multiple pages, but some receiving applications accept only a single-page TIFF. Keep the individual page files if the destination rejects multipage output.
• LZW and ZIP compression preserve raster data without additional image loss. JPEG-compressed TIFF can reduce the size of photographic pages but may create artifacts around text and line drawings.
• Raster conversion does not create searchable text or editable content. Run OCR afterward with software that supports TIFF input if the output must be searchable.
