How to convert text to epub file

  • Ebooks

An e-reader, ebook library, or publishing workflow may require EPUB instead of a plain-text file. Converting the file adds reflowable reading, navigation, metadata, and a packaged ebook structure without requiring the reader to handle raw text.

What the TEXT format is

TEXT usually means unformatted plain text, commonly stored with the .txt extension. Notepad, TextEdit, Vim, code editors, note applications, logs, email archives, and older systems commonly create or use these files.

A plain-text file stores characters, line breaks, and sometimes tabs, but normally contains no fonts, heading hierarchy, images, hyperlinks, page layout, or embedded metadata. Its encoding may be UTF-8, UTF-16, Windows-1252, or another character set, so the correct encoding is necessary for accented characters and non-Latin scripts.

What the EPUB format is

EPUB is a ZIP-based ebook format containing XHTML content, a package manifest, metadata, stylesheets, and navigation files. EPUB 3 is supported by many current ebook applications and reading devices.

EPUB content reflows to fit the screen and the reader's selected font size. It can provide chapters, a table of contents, searchable text, bookmarks, cover images, right-to-left text, and accessibility metadata. EPUB is suitable for ebooks and digital reading; it is not the right format for preserving an exact printed page layout.

Convert the file with 101convert

  1. Open the TEXT-to-EPUB converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the .txt file and choose EPUB as the output format if the converter presents a format selector.
  3. Select the source character encoding when an encoding option is available. UTF-8 is the usual choice for files saved by modern editors.
  4. Start the conversion and download the resulting .epub file.
  5. Open the EPUB in an application such as Apple Books, Thorium Reader, or Calibre to inspect paragraph breaks, special characters, chapters, and navigation.

This browser-based option requires no installation and is appropriate for clean, non-confidential text. Do not upload sensitive material unless the service's handling and retention terms are acceptable.

Convert with Calibre

  1. Install Calibre, then select Add books and import the .txt file.
  2. Select the imported book and choose Convert books → Convert individually.
  3. Set the output format to EPUB, then enter the title, author, language, and other metadata.
  4. Review the text-input and structure settings, especially paragraph detection and chapter detection.
  5. Choose OK, then open the generated EPUB in Calibre's viewer or transfer it to the target device.

Calibre is useful for local conversion, metadata editing, batch processing, and checking the result without uploading the source file.

Convert with Pandoc

Pandoc can create an EPUB from a plain-text or Markdown-based source. For a UTF-8 file with basic paragraph structure, use:

pandoc book.txt -o book.epub --metadata title="Book title" --metadata author="Author name"

Plain text generally produces paragraphs only. To create reliable chapters, headings, lists, emphasis, or links, prepare the source as Markdown using a .md file and explicit syntax such as # Chapter 1 and ## Section, then run the same command with the Markdown source. Convert a non-UTF-8 source to UTF-8 before processing if Pandoc or the operating system interprets its characters incorrectly.

Quality and compatibility limits

Plain text has no recoverable formatting. Conversion cannot recreate boldface, italics, footnotes, images, hyperlinks, dependable chapter titles, or page breaks that were never stored in the source. Add headings and chapter separators before conversion, preferably in Markdown or HTML, when the book needs structure.

Line-break conventions affect paragraph detection. A file with a line break after every source line may become many short paragraphs, while a file with no blank lines may become one large paragraph. Normalize line endings and check the generated EPUB manually.

Enter metadata and add a cover separately when the conversion tool supports those options; a cover image is not present in a plain-text source. Check the result on the intended reading application because font handling, margins, table-of-contents generation, CSS support, and EPUB 3 features vary between devices.

For publishing or distribution, validate the finished file with epubcheck book.epub. EPUBCheck detects malformed package files, invalid XHTML, and navigation or metadata errors, but it cannot determine whether paragraph breaks, chapters, or typography are appropriate.
