We can't read KFX files yet, so this conversion isn't available. If you can export your work to one of these formats - or others - we'll turn it into EPUB:

How to convert kfx to epub file

  • Ebooks

Kindle apps and devices may provide a book only as KFX, while Kobo, Apple Books, library systems, and editing tools commonly require EPUB. Conversion is suitable for DRM-free books or files you are legally authorized to export and modify.

What the KFX format is

KFX is Amazon’s proprietary Kindle ebook format. It supports reflowable text, enhanced typesetting, embedded resources, and other Kindle-specific layout features. Kindle for PC, Kindle for Mac, Kindle devices, and Amazon’s delivery systems may download or create KFX content, often in an application data folder rather than through a normal Save as command.

A Kindle download may contain a .kfx file, a .kfx-zip container, or related resource files. File names and folder structures vary by Kindle software version. Purchased books are commonly encrypted with Kindle DRM, which prevents ordinary ebook converters from reading them.

What EPUB is

EPUB is an open, ZIP-based ebook format supported by Apple Books, Kobo, PocketBook, Thorium Reader, Adobe Digital Editions, Calibre, and most current reading applications. Its HTML and CSS content reflows to fit different screens and supports adjustable fonts, search, text-to-speech, and other accessibility features.

EPUB is useful for cross-platform reading, library cataloguing, editing, validation, and archiving without depending on Kindle software. It cannot preserve every KFX feature: Amazon page numbers, enhanced-typesetting behavior, Kindle annotations, synchronised reading position, and some proprietary metadata may be lost.

How to convert KFX to EPUB with Calibre

  1. Locate the source file supplied by Kindle for PC, Kindle for Mac, or a Kindle device. Work only with a DRM-free file or a file you are authorized to process. A .sdr sidecar folder is generally not the ebook itself and is not required for conversion.
  2. Install the current desktop release of Calibre from calibre-ebook.com.
  3. Install the KFX Input plugin from its maintained MobileRead distribution. In Calibre, try Preferences → Plugins → Get new plugins; if it is not listed, download the plugin ZIP from its official MobileRead thread and use Preferences → Plugins → Load plugin from file. Restart Calibre when requested.
  4. Choose Add books and import the DRM-free .kfx or supported KFX container. If Calibre rejects it, confirm that KFX Input is enabled and that the file is complete; an encrypted or unsupported KFX variant will not open.
  5. Select the book and choose Convert books. Set Output format to EPUB, check the title, author, cover, language, metadata, and table of contents, then select OK.
  6. Open the generated EPUB in Calibre’s viewer or another EPUB reader. Use Calibre’s Edit book or an editor such as Sigil to correct HTML, CSS, image dimensions, or navigation. Run EPUBCheck when the file will be submitted to a publisher, library, or distribution platform.

Calibre, KFX Input, and legitimate online converters cannot normally read an encrypted KFX file. Do not assume that owning a Kindle purchase grants permission to remove its DRM; follow the applicable law, licence terms, and the rights holder’s export options.

Online conversion options

A browser-based service can be used for a DRM-free book when the service explicitly lists KFX as an input and EPUB as an output. Convertio is a recognised general-purpose option whose supported formats can change, so verify the current conversion page before uploading. Do not upload DRM-protected books, confidential manuscripts, or files containing personal information; the service receives the complete ebook and may retain it according to its privacy policy. Local Calibre conversion avoids that transfer and is preferable for personal books.

Quality and compatibility limits

The conversion is not lossless. Plain reflowable text, basic images, and standard chapter structure usually transfer well, but fixed-layout pages, complex tables, custom fonts, embedded media, interactive elements, image positioning, Kindle X-Ray data, and proprietary navigation can be altered or omitted.

Inspect the EPUB on both a small screen and a larger display. Check chapter links, cover rendering, missing characters, font fallback, image scaling, footnotes, tables, and right-to-left or vertical text where applicable. If a publisher or author can provide the original EPUB, use it instead: source EPUB normally preserves accessibility metadata, navigation, styles, and images better than a reverse conversion from KFX.
