How to convert jpg to epub file

  • Ebooks

A scanned book, comic, photo collection, or set of page images may need EPUB format for an ebook reader or library app that does not accept standalone JPG files. Converting the images packages them as ebook pages, but it does not turn the pixels into selectable text.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also written JPEG, is a lossy raster-image format used mainly for photographs and scanned pages. Cameras, smartphones, scanners, web browsers, and software such as Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, and Microsoft Paint commonly create or export JPG files.

A JPG contains one flattened image, not text structure, chapters, navigation, or ebook metadata. JPEG compression discards image data, so repeatedly opening and saving the same file can reduce image quality.

What the EPUB format is

EPUB is a ZIP-based ebook container that packages XHTML content, CSS, images, metadata, and a manifest. Most EPUB books are reflowable: text and images can adjust to the reader’s screen, font size, and orientation. EPUB 3 also supports navigation, embedded fonts, audio, video, and accessibility metadata when the content is built to use them.

When JPG files are converted without OCR, the result is an image-based EPUB. Each image acts as a page or content section, which suits comics, scanned books, illustrations, and layouts that must remain visually unchanged. The images do not automatically become searchable, selectable, resizable text, or accessible descriptions.

How to convert JPG files to EPUB

Using 101convert.com

  1. Open the JPG-to-EPUB converter on 101convert.com. The built-in converter can be used free without installing software.
  2. Select the JPG file or files. For multiple pages, rename them in reading order, such as 001.jpg, 002.jpg, and 003.jpg, before selecting them.
  3. Start the conversion and download the resulting .epub file when processing finishes.
  4. Open the EPUB in the intended reading application and verify page order, orientation, cropping, image sharpness, and file size.

Using an HTML file and Calibre

Calibre can package a numbered image sequence into an EPUB. Put the JPG files and an HTML file in the same folder, then list the images in order. A simple file named book.html is:

<!doctype html><html><head><meta charset="utf-8"><style>body{margin:0}div{page-break-after:always;break-after:page}img{display:block;width:100%;height:auto}</style></head><body><div><img src="001.jpg" alt=""></div><div><img src="002.jpg" alt=""></div></body></html>

Run Calibre’s command-line converter from that folder:

ebook-convert book.html book.epub

Calibre and its command-line tools must be installed, and ebook-convert must be available in the system path or invoked with its full installation path. Add descriptive alt text instead of empty values when the page image conveys information to screen-reader users. For many pages, generate the HTML list automatically or use a dedicated EPUB editor.

Using LibreOffice Writer

  1. Create a Writer document and set its page size and margins to match the source images.
  2. Insert one JPG with Insert → Image on each page, preserving its aspect ratio, and add a manual page break after each image.
  3. Use File → Export As → Export as EPUB. Choose reflowable layout for ordinary ebook content; choose fixed layout only if the installed LibreOffice version offers that option and the target reader supports it.
  4. Open the exported EPUB in the target reading app. If images are clipped or surrounded by unwanted margins, adjust the page settings and image dimensions before exporting again.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • Conversion packages or references the existing pixels; it cannot restore detail lost through JPEG compression or increase the source resolution.
  • JPEG images compress poorly inside a ZIP-based EPUB, so an image-only book can remain large. Resize images to the largest dimensions needed for the intended reading device, while retaining enough resolution for legible pages.
  • Use original JPG files instead of screenshots or repeatedly recompressed copies. Avoid stretching images; incorrect aspect-ratio changes distort page content.
  • Reflowable EPUB readers may scale, reposition, or crop images differently. Fixed-layout EPUB preserves page geometry more closely, but support varies by application and device.
  • Image-only EPUBs normally cannot provide text search, copying, font resizing, or reliable screen-reader access. Run OCR with Adobe Acrobat, ABBYY FineReader, or Tesseract when selectable text is required, then create a text-based EPUB from the OCR output and proofread recognition errors.
  • Do not rename a JPG to .epub. A valid EPUB requires a package structure containing XHTML or other content documents, a manifest, metadata, navigation, and the required uncompressed mimetype entry.
