Free online AZW3 to EPUB converter

A Kindle book may need conversion when a non-Kindle reader, library system, editing application, or archive accepts EPUB but not Amazon’s AZW3 format. The process produces a DRM-free EPUB that can be opened, edited, shared, or stored independently of Kindle software.

What the AZW3 format is

AZW3, also called Kindle Format 8 (KF8), is an Amazon e-book format derived from the MOBI family. It stores reflowable HTML content with CSS, images, tables, metadata, and support for embedded fonts and more advanced layouts than older MOBI files.

Amazon publishing tools and Kindle delivery systems use AZW3, and users may encounter .azw3 files in older Kindle downloads or DRM-free personal e-book collections. A file can contain Amazon DRM, but DRM is separate from the format itself. Calibre and ordinary converters do not convert DRM-protected books; use a legally obtained DRM-free copy and do not bypass access controls.

What the EPUB format is

EPUB is an open, ZIP-based e-book package containing XHTML or HTML content, CSS, images, fonts, navigation, and metadata. EPUB 3 adds support for structured navigation, accessibility features, embedded media, and language-specific text handling, although individual reading systems support these features unevenly.

EPUB is supported by Kobo and most other non-Kindle e-readers, Apple Books, Adobe Digital Editions, Thorium Reader, library platforms, and many mobile reading apps. Its inspectable XHTML and CSS also make it easier to edit, validate, archive, and distribute than a Kindle-specific file.

How to convert the file with Calibre

1. Install Calibre from its official desktop distribution and open it.
2. Choose Add books and select the DRM-free .azw3 file.
3. Select the imported book and choose Convert books.
4. Set the output format to EPUB. Check the title, author, language, cover, and other metadata in the conversion window.
5. Review the EPUB output settings, including image sizing, font handling, table-of-contents generation, and page or chapter structure. Avoid unnecessary font embedding if a smaller file is needed.
6. Click OK. When conversion finishes, right-click the book and choose Open containing folder to find the generated .epub file.

How to check the EPUB

Open the result in Calibre’s viewer, Apple Books, Thorium Reader, or the intended e-reader. Check chapter navigation, cover display, headings, bold and italic text, footnotes, images, tables, links, right-to-left text, and non-Latin characters.

For publication or distribution, validate the file with EPUBCheck. A file that opens in one reader can still contain invalid package metadata, broken links, malformed XHTML, or unsupported CSS.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Conversion rewrites the source markup; it does not restore content blocked by DRM or repair a badly constructed AZW3 file. Complex Kindle layouts, fixed-position elements, nested tables, drop caps, custom fonts, unusual spacing, interactive content, and embedded media may change or disappear.

Use Calibre’s Edit book tool or another EPUB editor to correct XHTML and CSS after conversion. Keep the original AZW3 because metadata, typography, and layout changes made during conversion may be difficult to reverse.
