Convert MPUB to EPUB

An EPUB copy is needed when an e-reader, library platform, or publishing service rejects an MPUB file. Because MPUB is uncommon and may be proprietary or DRM-protected, the dependable solution is usually to obtain EPUB from the publisher or recreate it from the original book source.

What the MPUB format is

MPUB is an uncommon ebook extension associated with Mobcast and older mobile-book distribution workflows. It is not a broadly documented, interchangeable ebook standard like EPUB, and files with this extension may use application-specific packaging, protection, or metadata.

Do not confuse a Mobcast MPUB file with a Mobipocket Publisher project or with a .mobi ebook. The extension alone does not identify the internal format. Renaming .mpub to .epub or .mobi changes only the filename and does not convert the file.

Identify the source of the file first: check the download page, publisher, reading application, and any accompanying license or asset files. An MPUB protected by DRM cannot normally be converted with general-purpose ebook software.

What the EPUB format is

EPUB is a standardized ebook package containing reflowable HTML or XHTML, CSS, metadata, navigation, and media resources. It is accepted by most ebook applications, library systems, publishing platforms, and many dedicated readers.

Its reflowable layout supports adjustable text size, searching, bookmarks, and adaptation to different screen sizes. EPUB 3 can also contain advanced navigation, embedded fonts, audio, video, and scripts, but individual reading systems may support only part of that specification.

How to produce an EPUB

1. Keep an untouched backup of the MPUB file and record where it came from. Do not remove nearby images, fonts, licenses, or project files.
2. Check the original retailer or publisher for an EPUB download. If the MPUB is a Mobcast-distributed book, obtaining an authorized EPUB copy is generally more reliable than attempting to decode the package.
3. If you control the publication and have its original HTML, XHTML, XML, or OPF files, use those source files instead of the MPUB. Preserve the text, images, stylesheets, metadata, and navigation files in a working copy.
4. Install Calibre from calibre-ebook.com. Choose Add books and test the MPUB only if you want to determine whether that particular file is recognized. Calibre does not provide a guaranteed MPUB importer.
5. For a recognized source or an exported HTML or MOBI file, select the book, choose Convert books, set the output format to EPUB, check the title, author, language, cover, chapter detection, and table of contents, then select OK.
6. If Calibre rejects the MPUB, open the file with the software that created or supplied it, if that software provides an authorized export. Export to HTML, EPUB, MOBI, or another documented format, then convert that output with Calibre. Do not assume that every Mobcast MPUB can be opened by Mobipocket software.
7. Open the result in an EPUB reader and validate it with EPUBCheck before distribution. For source-based production, an EPUB editor such as Sigil can be used to inspect and correct XHTML, CSS, metadata, and navigation after the initial conversion.

Online conversion options

Services such as CloudConvert and Zamzar may convert an accepted HTML, MOBI, or other intermediate file to EPUB, but their supported formats change and they generally do not offer dependable direct MPUB conversion. Confirm that the service lists the exact input extension before uploading.

Do not upload DRM-protected books, unpublished manuscripts, confidential documents, or files whose distribution terms prohibit third-party processing. An online service cannot bypass legitimate DRM, and a service claiming to do so should not be used.

Quality and compatibility limits

A conversion through a compiled ebook can lose fixed positioning, complex tables, embedded fonts, interactive elements, footnotes, links, cover metadata, or navigation. Inspect every chapter, image, hyperlink, footnote, cover, and table of contents; compare the output with the original.

For a publication, rebuilding from HTML, XML, or OPF source produces better results than converting an MPUB or MOBI intermediary. Clean the source, create the EPUB, test it in more than one reading system, and run EPUBCheck. If no authorized exporter or source files are available, there may be no technically reliable MPUB-to-EPUB conversion.
