Free online AZW3 to TXT converter

A plain-text file is needed when an ebook must be edited in a basic text editor, processed by scripts, indexed by legacy software, or shared without Kindle-specific layout. Converting it also removes images and formatting, producing a broadly compatible file that is usually smaller.

What the AZW3 format is

AZW3, also called Kindle Format 8, is Amazon's ebook format for richer typography and layout than the older MOBI format. It can contain HTML and CSS styling, embedded fonts, images, tables, hyperlinks, and ebook navigation. Kindle devices and Kindle software support Kindle books, while AZW3 files are also used for DRM-free ebooks transferred to a computer or managed with software such as Calibre.

An AZW3 file may contain Amazon DRM. DRM-protected books commonly cannot be opened or converted by Calibre or other conversion tools. Do not attempt to remove DRM unless you have the legal right to do so and local law permits it.

What the TXT format is

TXT stores plain character data without fonts, images, page layout, CSS, embedded ebook navigation, or reliable metadata fields. It opens in Notepad and other text editors and can be processed by command-line tools, scripts, databases, and legacy applications on nearly any operating system.

TXT is suitable when editable, searchable text matters more than presentation. It cannot preserve cover art, illustrations, hyperlinks, tables, footnotes, page numbers, or complex chapter styling.

How to convert AZW3 to TXT

Using Calibre on a computer

1. Install and open Calibre, select Add books, and choose the DRM-free .azw3 file.
2. Select the imported book and choose Convert books → Convert individually.
3. Set the output format in the upper-right corner to TXT.
4. Open TXT Output and select UTF-8 as the encoding. Review the paragraph and line-break settings if the source contains unusual formatting.
5. Select OK. Calibre places the result in the book's author and title folder in its library. Use Save to disk to copy the TXT file to another location.

Calibre's command-line utility can perform the same conversion:

ebook-convert "input.azw3" "output.txt" --txt-output-encoding utf-8

Quote paths containing spaces. The command works only when Calibre can read the source and the book is not protected by unsupported DRM.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Conversion extracts text and an approximate reading order; it does not reproduce the original pages or typography. Images and other non-text content are discarded.
• Chapter headings, paragraphs, footnotes, tables, and sidebars may appear in an unexpected order or be separated by extra blank lines when the source uses complex HTML or CSS.
• UTF-8 preserves accented characters, non-Latin scripts, and many symbols. Opening the file with a different encoding can produce garbled text or replacement characters.
• Check chapter boundaries, quotation marks, em dashes, tables, and footnotes after conversion. These locations commonly reveal extraction and line-break errors.
• A DRM-related conversion failure does not necessarily mean that the AZW3 file is damaged.
