Free online LRF to TXT converter

Older Sony Reader libraries may contain LRF ebooks that current readers, text editors, archive systems, or import tools cannot open. Converting an unprotected copy to TXT extracts its readable text for searching, editing, quoting, or long-term plain-text storage.

What LRF files are

LRF is Sony’s older BBeB (BroadBand eBook) format, used by early Sony Reader devices and Sony eBook software before EPUB became Sony’s primary ebook format. An .lrf file can contain book text, images, embedded fonts, metadata, chapter structure, and page-layout instructions.

LRF has limited support in current ebook software. Calibre can import and convert non-DRM LRF files, but many modern ereaders and reading apps do not open them directly.

What TXT files are

TXT is plain text: characters and line breaks without embedded fonts, images, fixed pages, tables, or ebook navigation. A .txt file opens in standard editors such as Notepad, TextEdit, VS Code, LibreOffice, and terminal-based tools.

TXT is useful for full-text indexing, editing, accessibility processing, excerpts, and archives where visual ebook design is not required. Use UTF-8 encoding where available to retain accented and non-Latin characters reliably.

Convert an LRF file to TXT

To convert without installing software, upload the .lrf file to the converter on 101convert.com, select TXT as the output format, start conversion, and save the downloaded .txt file. Keep the original file until the converted text has been checked.

For local conversion, Calibre is the practical desktop option:

1. Install and open Calibre.
2. Select Add books and choose the .lrf file.
3. Select the imported book, then choose Convert books → Convert individually.
4. Select TXT from the Output format list in the upper-right corner.
5. If the TXT output settings provide an encoding option, select UTF-8.
6. Click OK and wait for the conversion job to finish.
7. Right-click the title and choose Save to disk → Save only TXT format to disk to export the converted file.

Calibre also installs the command-line converter:

ebook-convert "book.lrf" "book.txt"

Quote paths that contain spaces. On some systems, Calibre’s program directory must be added to the command-line PATH before ebook-convert is available.

Text loss and DRM limitations

TXT retains textual content and usually paragraph breaks, not the original presentation. Cover art, inline images, embedded fonts, page numbers, margins, columns, fixed-position notes, and complex tables are removed or reduced to plain text.

Chapter titles may remain as text, but TXT has no clickable table of contents or internal ebook links. Review headings, footnotes, tables, hyphenation, and character encoding after conversion, particularly with scanned, illustrated, or multi-column books.

DRM-protected Sony ebooks cannot be converted by Calibre without authorized access. Protected Sony BBeB titles were commonly distributed as .lrx files, although libraries and backups can vary. If Calibre cannot open the book’s content, conversion may fail or produce incomplete output.
