Convert BOOK to TXT

A device, archive system, editor, or command-line tool may accept only plain TXT, requiring an ebook stored as .book to be converted. TXT also creates a smaller, searchable copy for scripting and sharing, but removes ebook presentation and metadata.

What the BOOK format is

In the Ebooks context, .book commonly identifies a BookDesigner ebook project. BookDesigner is an older Windows application used to create and convert ebooks; its project files can contain book text, chapter structure, formatting, metadata, and embedded images.

.book is not a universal ebook standard. Other software can use the same extension for a different structure, so identify the creating application from the file's source, download information, or operating-system association. Renaming .book to .txt changes only the filename and does not convert the contents.

What the TXT format is

.txt stores character data without fonts, page layout, images, links, tables, chapter styling, or ebook metadata. Text editors, terminal utilities, document-management systems, and nearly all operating systems can open it.

TXT is suitable for full-text search, indexing, scripting, simple editing, and plain-text archives. UTF-8 is normally the best output encoding because it preserves accented characters and non-Latin scripts more reliably than legacy ANSI or DOS encodings.

Convert a BookDesigner file with BookDesigner

1. Install BookDesigner on Windows. It is discontinued software, so use a trustworthy source and expect compatibility issues on current Windows versions.
2. Open the file in the same BookDesigner release, if known, using its book-opening or project-loading command. Do not open the file in a text editor as a conversion method.
3. Check the loaded chapters, characters, and images. If the file is not recognized, it may use another program's .book structure.
4. Use the program's export or output-format control and select TXT. Menu names vary by release; they may appear under File → Save As, File → Export, or the book-output panel.
5. Select UTF-8 when available, choose an output folder, and save the file.
6. Open the result in a UTF-8-capable editor such as Notepad, Notepad++, or Visual Studio Code. Check chapter headings, quotation marks, accented characters, paragraph breaks, and the final file encoding.

If BookDesigner can export only HTML, EPUB, FB2, or another supported intermediate format, verify that intermediate file first, then convert it with Calibre. In Calibre's graphical interface, use Add books, select the intermediate file, choose Convert books, set the output format to TXT, and select OK. The equivalent command is ebook-convert input.epub output.txt; Calibre generally cannot read an unknown proprietary .book file directly.

Quality and compatibility limits

TXT conversion removes bold and italic styling, images, hyperlinks, page breaks, tables, footnotes, cover art, and metadata. Chapter headings usually remain as ordinary lines, but heading levels and other structure can be lost.

A source made from scanned page images contains no selectable characters. Exporting it normally will not produce readable text; run OCR first, verify the recognized text, and then save it as UTF-8 TXT.

Inspect the output for merged paragraphs, duplicated headers or footers, soft hyphens, missing line breaks, replacement characters, and incorrect quotation marks. If the receiving system requires ANSI, DOS, or another legacy encoding, choose that encoding only after confirming its character limitations.
