In most cases, a database file cannot be turned into a true plain-text file by simply changing its extension. A .txt file is just plain text, while database files such as .db, .sqlite, or .mdb store structured data, indexes, and relationships in a database format.

If your goal is to view the data in a text editor, the usual approach is to export the database to a text-based format such as Comma Separated Values (.csv) or tab-separated values (.tsv). You can then rename the exported file to .txt if you only want it to open easily in a text editor. However, renaming .csv or .tsv to .txt does not change the file contents; it only changes the filename extension.

For better readability, it is often better to export directly to text when the database software supports it. Many programs provide this through File → Export, File → Save as, or a similar menu. Some tools also let you choose delimiters, quote handling, and encoding, which matters when the data contains commas, tabs, quotes, line breaks, or non-ASCII characters.

If you need a file that can be imported later, CSV or TSV is usually a better choice than a renamed TXT file, because plain text alone does not preserve database structure or data types. For batch jobs or advanced conversions, command-line tools and scripts can also export database contents to text formats.

In short, the best method depends on the database type and the software you have. If you only need readable output, export to CSV, TSV, or direct text. If you need to keep the data usable, avoid relying on a simple extension change.
