Free online AZW3 to HTML converter

A browser, website, HTML editor, or publishing system may require an AZW3 ebook as ordinary web files. Converting it produces editable HTML and separate resources that can be inspected, shared, archived, or published outside Kindle software.

What the AZW3 format is

AZW3, also called Kindle Format 8 (KF8), is Amazon’s ebook format for newer Kindle books and apps. It is normally stored in a Kindle ebook container with content based largely on HTML and CSS, plus images, fonts, metadata, and Kindle-specific layout information.

Kindle devices and apps, Amazon publishing workflows, Kindle Previewer, and ebook-management software use AZW3. Calibre can also create it when converting another ebook format. An AZW3 file may contain DRM; DRM-protected books generally cannot be converted by Calibre or extraction tools.

What the HTML format is

HTML is the markup format rendered by web browsers. A book conversion usually creates an HTML document or several chapter documents together with CSS stylesheets, images, fonts, and other supporting files.

HTML works with browsers, website publishing systems, text editors, and source-level editing tools without requiring Kindle software. The converted files may still depend on relative links to local images, stylesheets, and fonts, so they should be kept in their extracted directory structure.

How to convert AZW3 to HTML

Using Calibre

1. Open Calibre, choose Add books, and select the DRM-free .azw3 file.
2. Select the imported book and choose Convert books.
3. Set the output format to HTMLZ, then start the conversion. Calibre normally creates .htmlz, a ZIP-based HTML package rather than a single loose HTML file.
4. Extract the .htmlz file with the operating system’s archive utility. The extracted directory usually contains the main HTML file, CSS, images, and possibly fonts.
5. Open the main HTML file in a browser or edit it in an HTML editor. Do not move individual files if you want their relative image and stylesheet links to continue working.

Calibre also provides a command-line method:

ebook-convert book.azw3 book.htmlz

Extract the result on systems with the unzip command:

unzip book.htmlz -d book_html

An archive utility can extract the file when unzip is unavailable. Calibre’s conversion options can change the output; inspect settings for structure detection, page layout, fonts, and styling when the default result needs correction.

Using KindleUnpack

KindleUnpack can extract the HTML-based resources from a DRM-free AZW3 file when retaining the ebook’s original chapters and assets is more useful than creating one consolidated document. A typical command is:

python kindleunpack.py book.azw3 output_folder

The output may include chapter HTML files, CSS, images, fonts, and package metadata. Command syntax and output structure vary between KindleUnpack versions, so use the included documentation if this command does not match the installed version.

Do not upload DRM-protected, confidential, or otherwise restricted books unless the service and rights holder permit that processing.

Quality and compatibility limits

• DRM blocks normal conversion. Use an authorized DRM-free copy or obtain an unrestricted export from the rights holder; do not bypass access controls.
• Fixed-layout positioning, interactive elements, pop-up footnotes, embedded fonts, navigation metadata, image magnification, tables, and complex CSS may be altered or omitted.
• Calibre’s HTMLZ output may include generated wrapper markup, CSS, and metadata rather than clean website-ready HTML. Review and revise the markup and styles before publication.
• Open the extracted files in a browser and check images, links, headings, tables, footnotes, right-to-left text, non-Latin characters, and font rendering. Complex books commonly need manual HTML or CSS corrections.
• HTML conversion does not necessarily produce one self-contained file. Preserve the associated assets, or rewrite the references and embed resources if a single-file deliverable is required.
