Free online AZW3 to PDF converter

PDF is needed when an ebook must be printed, shared, archived, or opened in software that does not support Kindle formats. Converting AZW3 creates a fixed-page document, but reflowable ebook features and protected content may not survive the conversion.

What the AZW3 format is

AZW3 is Amazon's Kindle Format 8 ebook format, used by Kindle devices, Kindle apps, and ebook-management software. It is a packaged ebook based on HTML, CSS, images, fonts, and other resources; it supports reflowable text, tables, embedded fonts, and richer layouts than older MOBI files.

AZW3 files can be produced by Kindle publishing tools or Calibre and may be obtained from a Kindle device or Kindle-related download. Newer Amazon books may instead use formats such as KFX, so a Kindle purchase is not necessarily an AZW3 file.

Many commercial Kindle books contain DRM. Standard conversion software generally cannot convert a DRM-protected book. Use an unprotected file that you are authorized to convert, and do not bypass DRM where doing so violates copyright or applicable law.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a page-description format that preserves page size, text positioning, typography, and graphics across operating systems. Its fixed layout suits printing, formal sharing, and archival copies, and PDF files are supported by browsers, operating systems, ebook readers, and dedicated document software.

PDF does not normally reflow text for small screens as well as AZW3. Accessibility, selectable text, font embedding, and text extraction depend on the conversion settings and the source content.

How to convert an AZW3 file

Using Calibre

1. Install and open Calibre.
2. Select Add books and choose the .azw3 file.
3. Select the imported book and choose Convert books.
4. Set the output format to PDF.
5. Open Page setup and select the required paper profile, such as A4 or Letter. Set margins and an output profile appropriate for the intended printer or device.
6. Review PDF output settings, including page layout and font options where available, then select OK.
7. When processing finishes, right-click the book and select Open containing folder to locate the generated PDF.

Calibre's command-line converter performs the same basic conversion:

Replace the filenames with full paths when necessary. The ebook-convert command is installed with Calibre and must be available on the system path, or invoked using its full executable path.

Quality and compatibility limits

Open the result and inspect the cover, table of contents, several chapter starts, complex tables, images, and the final pages.

Interactive Kindle features, pop-up text, scripting, multimedia, navigation elements, and other enhanced-content features may be omitted or flattened. DRM-protected books usually fail to import or convert in Calibre and similar software. For comfortable reading on a phone or small ereader, retaining AZW3 or using EPUB is generally more suitable than creating a fixed-page PDF.
