What FB2 is

FB2, or FictionBook 2, is an XML-based e-book format designed mainly for fiction and other text-heavy publications. A file stores logical structure—title, author, sections, paragraphs, poems, notes, tables, and metadata—instead of defining fixed pages.

An FB2 file is usually a single XML document. Cover artwork and illustrations can be stored inside it as Base64-encoded image data. UTF-8 is common, although the XML declaration can specify another encoding. FB2 supports Unicode text when the reader or converter uses fonts containing the required characters.

Fixed pagination keeps the appearance consistent across operating systems and printers when the necessary fonts and images are preserved. The same property limits reading flexibility: text does not reflow naturally on small screens, and changing the font size can require a new conversion or produce awkward page layouts.

Quality and compatibility checks

FB2 defines structure rather than page design, so conversion software must create page breaks, margins, typography, headers, and footers. Check chapter starts, poetry, quotations, footnotes, tables, hyphenation, and image placement in the finished PDF.

Malformed XML or incomplete metadata can cause missing sections, an incorrect title or author, or a broken table of contents. Open the source in Calibre first and use Edit metadata to correct title, author, cover, and series information before converting.

Choose fonts that contain every character used in the book. Empty boxes, missing accents, or incorrect Cyrillic and Greek characters usually indicate font coverage or embedding problems; change the PDF font settings and convert again. Low-resolution source images cannot be made sharper, and images may be scaled to fit the selected page.

The PDF can be larger than the FB2 because it stores rendered pages, image data, and sometimes embedded fonts. Select the final paper size before conversion, especially for printing, because changing page dimensions afterward can alter margins and pagination. For phones and e-readers that support reflowable text, the original FB2 or an EPUB conversion generally resizes more comfortably than PDF.
