Convert IBA to PDF

A PDF is useful when an iBooks Author project must be shared, printed, archived, or opened on devices that do not run Apple’s book software. The dependable route is to export the finished project from iBooks Author or import it into Pages on macOS.

What the IBA format is

IBA is the project format used by Apple iBooks Author, an older macOS application for creating digital books. An IBA file is a package containing chapter layouts, text, images, fonts, videos, audio, widgets, and other resources; it is not a finished, general-purpose ebook file.

IBA projects are used mainly by authors, educators, publishers, and organizations that created books with iBooks Author. Renaming .iba to .pdf does not convert the content, and extracting the package’s internal files does not reproduce its page layout.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a page-oriented document format that preserves page size, positioning, typography, and graphics across operating systems. Browsers, Preview, Adobe Acrobat, printers, and document-management systems support it, making PDF suitable for distributing or archiving a static version of an IBA book.

PDF does not retain the editable iBooks Author project structure. It also cannot reproduce most iBooks-specific behavior, including video, audio controls, HTML widgets, quizzes, popovers, and interactive 3D content.

How to export with iBooks Author

1. Copy the original .iba file to a backup location.
2. Open the project in iBooks Author on a Mac with the application installed. Apple discontinued iBooks Author and removed it from the Mac App Store, so it may be available only on an older Mac or through an existing installation.
3. Resolve missing-font warnings and inspect chapters, page breaks, images, links, and other content before exporting.
4. Choose File → Export → PDF.
5. Select the available image-quality or resolution setting. Use the highest setting for printing and a lower setting only when reducing file size is more important than image detail.
6. Choose a destination, enter a filename such as book.pdf, and select Export.
7. Open the PDF in Preview or Adobe Acrobat and inspect every chapter, especially pages containing widgets, media, custom fonts, transparency, or complex layouts.

Using Pages when iBooks Author is unavailable

On supported Mac systems, Apple Pages can open or import some iBooks Author books. Open Pages, choose File → Open, select the .iba file, and review the imported document for layout changes or unsupported objects. Then use File → Export To → PDF.

Pages is not a guaranteed replacement for iBooks Author: unsupported widgets and interactive elements may be removed, and imported pages can require manual correction. If Pages cannot open the project, obtain the original text and media and rebuild the book in Pages, Keynote, Affinity Publisher, or another layout application before exporting to PDF.

Quality and compatibility limits

The result is a static rendering. Text and ordinary page graphics usually export, and some hyperlinks may remain active, but media and iBooks-specific interactive features may be omitted or reduced to a still image. Test the exported file instead of assuming that a successful export preserved every feature.

Fonts installed on the source Mac can change line wrapping and pagination. Check page dimensions, margins, bleed, image resolution, and color handling for print work. A PDF intended for long-term preservation may need separate PDF/A validation; an ordinary PDF export is not automatically PDF/A-compliant.

There is no widely supported, reputable online converter that reliably accepts native IBA projects. Services such as generic document converters should not be expected to understand the package or reconstruct its layouts. Do not upload unpublished text, media, or personal information unless a service explicitly documents IBA support, file handling, and privacy terms. Native export through iBooks Author or Pages is the appropriate conversion method.
