Free online FB2 to RTF converter

An RTF copy is useful when an FB2 ebook must be edited, printed, or annotated in Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, or another program without direct FB2 support. It also provides a broadly compatible document for sharing while the original ebook remains available for reflowable reading.

What FB2 stores

FB2 (FictionBook 2) is an open, XML-based ebook format designed mainly for novels and other structured, text-heavy publications. It stores paragraphs, headings, chapters, authors, metadata, annotations, hyperlinks, and sometimes embedded images as structured content rather than fixed pages.

FB2 is especially common in Russian-speaking ebook communities, personal ebook libraries, archive collections, and workflows using applications such as Calibre and FBReader. Its structure supports reflowable reading and library metadata, but it is not intended to preserve a page-for-page print layout.

What RTF provides

RTF (Rich Text Format) is a document format supported by Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, WordPad, and many other word processors. It can preserve common formatting such as fonts, bold and italic text, headings, alignment, lists, tables, hyperlinks, and basic images without requiring the software that created the source file.

RTF is useful for manual editing, printing, annotations, and exchanging text with programs that do not open ebook formats. Compared with FB2, it is less suitable for ebook metadata, reflowable reading, and library management, and its files may be larger than plain-text or ebook files.

1. Open the FB2-to-RTF converter on 101convert.com. It can convert the file for free without installing software.
2. Upload the .fb2 file, choose RTF as the output format, and start the conversion.
3. Download the resulting .rtf file and open it in a word processor.
4. Check chapter headings, paragraph breaks, images, links, and special characters before editing or sharing the document.

Do not upload confidential or copyrighted material to an online service unless its use and storage terms are acceptable. For private documents, use a desktop converter instead.

Convert with Calibre

Calibre is free desktop ebook-management software for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and can convert FB2 files to RTF locally.

1. Install Calibre and select Add books to import the .fb2 file.
2. Select the book and choose Convert books.
3. Set the output format to RTF. Review the metadata, page layout, fonts, justification, and image settings if the document needs specific formatting.
4. Select OK and wait for the conversion to finish.
5. Right-click the book and choose Open containing folder to find the generated .rtf file.

Quote paths containing spaces, for example ebook-convert "My book.fb2" "My book.rtf". The graphical interface is preferable when adjusting layout or processing a single file; scripts can use the command for repeatable or batch conversions.

Quality and compatibility limits

The main text, chapter structure, emphasis, links, and basic images usually transfer. The result will not reproduce an ebook reader’s screen layout: page breaks, margins, line wrapping, headers, and footers are determined by the RTF application and its settings.

Embedded covers and illustrations can be resized, repositioned, or omitted. Complex metadata, custom styles, annotations, tables, and specialized FB2 XML elements may be simplified because RTF has no direct equivalent for every FB2 feature.

Inspect files containing Cyrillic, Greek, accented characters, unusual quotation marks, or non-Latin fonts. Current converters generally write Unicode text correctly, but an older word processor or a missing font can cause substitution or display errors. Keep the original .fb2 file if its metadata, embedded content, or reflowable ebook structure must be preserved.
