A word processor may require RTF when a book arrives as MOBI, especially for editing, annotation, printing, or sharing with someone without an ebook reader. Converting also provides a broadly supported document copy for archiving, although the result may not preserve the ebook’s original layout.
What the MOBI format is
MOBI is a legacy ebook format developed by Mobipocket and later used by Amazon Kindle software and devices. It is based on the PalmDOC format and can store reflowable text, chapter navigation, metadata, images, tables, and basic ebook styling.
MOBI files are found in older Kindle libraries, ebook collections, and files produced by older Mobipocket or Amazon publishing tools. Current Kindle workflows also use formats such as AZW3, KFX, and KPF, so not every Kindle book is a MOBI file. A .mobi file may contain DRM; standard conversion software cannot normally convert DRM-protected books without an unrestricted source or an authorized export method.
What the RTF format is
RTF, or Rich Text Format, is a text-based document format that records formatting with control words and supports common features such as paragraphs, headings, bold and italic text, fonts, alignment, lists, and images. Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, and many other word processors can open and edit it.
RTF is useful for cross-platform editing, annotation, printing, and document exchange because it does not depend on one ebook application. It does not preserve every ebook feature: advanced navigation, embedded fonts, interactive content, complex CSS, and some layout-specific metadata may be lost.
How to convert MOBI to RTF
Using Calibre
- Install and open Calibre, select Add books, and choose the
.mobifile. - Select the imported book and choose Convert books.
- Set the output format in the upper-right corner to
RTF. - Adjust Look & Feel if necessary to change the base font, remove excessive spacing, or modify paragraph formatting. Review structure and page-layout options when the source contains unusual chapter breaks or navigation.
- Click OK. Calibre stores the converted file in the book’s library folder. Select the book and use Save to disk to copy it to a different location.
For repeated conversions, Calibre includes the ebook-convert command:
ebook-convert input.mobi output.rtf
Replace the filenames with complete paths when needed. The command is installed with Calibre, but its executable location varies by operating system.
Using 101convert.com
You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software: upload the MOBI file, select RTF as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result. Do not upload DRM-protected, confidential, or copyrighted material unless the service’s handling and retention terms permit it.
Quality and compatibility limitations
The conversion reflows the ebook into a word-processing document rather than reproducing a fixed page layout. Chapter breaks, page numbers, headers, footers, footnotes, tables, cover images, hyperlinks, and decorative styling can shift, be simplified, or disappear. Check the RTF in the word processor you intend to use, particularly when the MOBI contains columns, complex tables, right-to-left text, or many images.
Keep the original MOBI and use an unrestricted source file. If Calibre produces unwanted navigation links, metadata, spacing, or chapter divisions, change its conversion settings and reconvert; manual cleanup is often faster after the structure has been corrected.
