What the MOBI format is

MOBI is an ebook format derived from Mobipocket technology and used by older Kindle devices, Kindle applications, and legacy ebook libraries. A file can contain reflowable text, metadata, a table of contents, images, and styling; some files also include KF8 content alongside the older MOBI representation.

Newer Kindle books are commonly distributed as AZW or AZW3, but .mobi files remain in older collections and are still produced by tools such as Calibre and legacy Kindle publishing software. A DRM-protected file may open only in authorized software and generally cannot be converted by ordinary tools. Conversion should not be used to bypass DRM.

What a TEXT file contains

A TEXT file normally uses the .txt extension and stores characters and line breaks without fonts, page layout, images, hyperlinks, embedded metadata, or ebook navigation. It opens in Notepad, TextEdit, code editors, command-line utilities, databases, and document-processing scripts.

Plain text is small, portable, searchable, and suitable for quotation extraction, indexing, accessibility processing, linguistic analysis, and basic archiving. It cannot preserve the original ebook's visual design or interactive features.

How to convert a MOBI file to TEXT

Using Calibre on a computer

1. Install and open Calibre.
2. Choose Add books and select the unprotected .mobi file.
3. Select the imported book and choose Convert books.
4. Set the output format in the upper-right corner to TXT.
5. Open TXT Output and select UTF-8 as the encoding when the option is available. UTF-8 preserves accented characters and non-Latin scripts.
6. Click OK. Calibre saves the result in its library folder; select the book and use Open containing folder to locate the generated .txt file.

Using Calibre from the command line

Calibre includes ebook-convert, which can convert an unprotected file without opening the graphical interface:

ebook-convert input.mobi output.txt

Quote paths containing spaces:

ebook-convert "My book.mobi" "My book.txt"

The input and output extensions select the formats. If the direct conversion produces unwanted navigation text or poor structure, convert the MOBI to EPUB first, edit the EPUB if necessary, and then convert the EPUB to TXT.

Quality and compatibility limitations

• Bold and italic styling, font sizes, columns, page breaks, alignment, and other layout information are discarded; some converters may represent emphasis or spacing inconsistently.
• Images, cover art, audio, video, mathematical layout, and interactive elements cannot be preserved in an ordinary TXT file.
• Chapter headings and paragraph breaks often survive, but headers, footers, page numbers, footnotes, and navigation landmarks can be misplaced, duplicated, or omitted.
• Use UTF-8 for curly quotation marks, em dashes, accented letters, Cyrillic, Arabic, Chinese, and other characters outside basic ASCII. A wrong legacy encoding can produce replacement symbols or unreadable text.
• Right-to-left scripts, ruby annotations, tables, poetry, and multi-column passages commonly require manual cleanup.
• A one-off copy-and-paste operation may work for a short, unprotected book, but it can omit chapters, links, or hidden text and does not provide a reliable structured export.
