Convert CRYPT to TEXT

People need this conversion when a WhatsApp backup must be searched, edited, archived, or shared outside WhatsApp. A CRYPT database is encrypted, so the supported path is to restore it in WhatsApp and export the recovered chat as plain text.

What the CRYPT format is

In the mobile-platform context, CRYPT usually refers to an encrypted WhatsApp chat database created by WhatsApp for Android. Typical filenames include msgstore.db.crypt14, dated msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt14 files, and older .crypt10 or .crypt12 variants; the exact suffix depends on the WhatsApp release.

The database contains messages and WhatsApp metadata, but it is not a readable document. Changing .crypt14 to .txt changes only the filename and does not decrypt or convert the data. WhatsApp normally needs the associated phone number, backup location, and device or backup encryption material to restore it.

Local Android backups are commonly stored in Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Databases on newer installations or WhatsApp/Databases on older ones. iPhone backups generally use WhatsApp's iCloud or Finder/iTunes backup systems rather than standalone CRYPT database files. The procedure below therefore applies primarily to Android local backups.

What the TEXT format is

A plain-text file, usually using the .txt extension, stores readable characters without WhatsApp's database encryption or interface formatting. Notepad, TextEdit, Notepad++, and VS Code can open it; text can be searched, copied, indexed, and archived with minimal software dependence.

WhatsApp's chat-export function creates a chronological text transcript. With media included, WhatsApp normally supplies the transcript together with separate attachments, often as a compressed package; without media, the export is smaller and consists of the conversation text.

How to convert the backup

Restore it in WhatsApp

1. Make a backup copy of the original CRYPT file. Do not alter the original filename, contents, or extension.
2. On Android, copy the backup to the WhatsApp database directory, such as Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Databases. Preserve its existing filename pattern. If the installed WhatsApp version requires the current-backup name, rename only the copy to the expected msgstore.db.cryptXX form, retaining the actual cryptXX suffix.
3. Install or reinstall the official WhatsApp application, verify the same phone number used for the backup, and follow its restore prompt. A local backup may not be detected if it belongs to another account, WhatsApp variant, or unsupported database version.
4. Open the required conversation and select More options → More → Export chat. Choose Without media for a compact text export, or Include media when attachments are needed and the export remains within WhatsApp's current size limits.
5. Save or transfer the generated export to a computer. The transcript can be opened in a text editor and saved as UTF-8 if cleanup or reformatting is required.

WhatsApp is the appropriate conversion tool because it performs the supported restore and export process. WhatsApp Web and WhatsApp Desktop do not independently decrypt an arbitrary CRYPT file; they display chats already available through a linked phone.

When restoration fails

Check the database folder, filename, phone number, WhatsApp variant, backup integrity, and compatibility between the CRYPT version and the installed application. An incomplete file, missing encryption key, different account, or end-to-end encrypted backup requiring a password or key cannot be repaired by changing the extension.

No reputable general-purpose online converter can safely turn an arbitrary WhatsApp CRYPT database into text. Do not upload private backups to conversion websites: the file may contain complete conversations, and a service claiming to bypass WhatsApp encryption cannot provide a reliable or authorized result. Specialist forensic software can handle some WhatsApp versions when used by an authorized investigator with the required device keys, but output may be incomplete and version-dependent.

Quality and compatibility limits

The exported transcript preserves readable message text and timestamps, but not WhatsApp's exact interface or every database field. Reactions, disappearing-message status, starred-message state, edits, encryption metadata, and some message types may be absent or represented differently. Media, documents, voice notes, and locations are separate attachments rather than embedded plain-text content.

Use UTF-8 when opening or resaving the transcript to preserve emoji and non-Latin characters. Keep the original CRYPT backup unchanged: the .txt export is a readable presentation of selected restored messages, not a complete replacement for the encrypted WhatsApp database.
