Convert CRYPT to PDF

A PDF is useful when an encrypted WhatsApp backup must be printed, submitted, archived, or shared with someone who cannot open WhatsApp. The backup must first be decrypted or exported by the application that created it; renaming the file does not perform a conversion.

What the CRYPT format is

.crypt is not one universal document format. The extension commonly identifies encrypted WhatsApp chat databases on Android, including files named msgstore.db.crypt12, msgstore.db.crypt14, and msgstore.db.crypt15. Other applications also use .crypt for application-specific encrypted files.

A WhatsApp CRYPT file contains protected database data rather than rendered pages. Decryption depends on the original WhatsApp installation, compatible backup system, account or phone number, and, for end-to-end encrypted backups, the required password or 64-digit key. The exact requirements vary by backup type and WhatsApp version.

What the PDF format is

PDF preserves page size, text layout, fonts, and images across operating systems, making it suitable for printing, formal submission, and sharing. Text exported from a chat can remain searchable and selectable, although PDF is primarily a fixed-layout output format rather than an editable chat database.

How to convert a WhatsApp CRYPT backup

1. Preserve the original. Make a working copy of the .crypt file and record its filename and source. Do not edit, rename, or upload the original.
2. Restore the backup through WhatsApp. Use the official Android WhatsApp application and the phone number associated with the backup. Local backups must be placed where WhatsApp can detect them; cloud backups also require the relevant account. Restoring an old backup can affect current chats, so use a spare or reset device when possible and create a current backup first.
3. Open the required conversation. WhatsApp can export a chat only after it has been restored and is readable in the application. Open the chat, select More options → More → Export chat, then choose Without media or Include media.
4. Export the transcript. WhatsApp normally produces a text transcript, often accompanied by separate image, video, audio, or document files when media is included. It does not create a PDF or reproduce the original chat screen.
5. Create the PDF. Open the text export in LibreOffice Writer or Microsoft Word, adjust page size, margins, fonts, and line wrapping, then select File → Export as PDF in LibreOffice or File → Save As → PDF in Word. A browser or text editor can also use Print → Microsoft Print to PDF on Windows, PDF → Save as PDF on macOS, or Print to File → PDF on many Linux desktops.

For a document containing exported media, insert the required images or other files into a word processor before generating the PDF. Keeping the original transcript and media folder alongside the PDF preserves information that may not fit conveniently into the rendered document.

How to convert a CRYPT file from another application

1. Identify the creating application from the file location, filename, device, or backup documentation. The extension alone does not identify the encryption algorithm or content.
2. Open or restore the file in that application using its supported password, account, recovery key, or decryption process. Use the application's File → Export, Save a copy, or Share command to produce readable TXT, HTML, DOCX, image, or another supported format.
3. Open the exported file in LibreOffice, Microsoft Word, a browser, or an image/PDF utility and use its PDF export command or the operating system's PDF printer.

There is no reliable general-purpose CRYPT-to-PDF converter because .crypt does not define one encryption scheme or one data structure. Tools marketed as universal CRYPT converters, including old WhatsApp database utilities, may support only particular legacy versions and can expose or damage private messages.

Online converters and privacy

Online services such as Adobe Acrobat online and CloudConvert may convert the already decrypted DOCX, HTML, or image export to PDF when the service supports that input. They generally cannot decrypt WhatsApp msgstore databases. Desktop software such as LibreOffice is preferable for private chats because the files remain on the device. Do not upload a WhatsApp backup, encryption key, password, or unredacted transcript to a service unless its privacy, retention, and deletion terms are acceptable.

Quality and compatibility limits

The WhatsApp export is a text transcript, not a database recovery or visual copy of the conversation. It may omit deleted messages, database metadata, message indexes, disappearing-message behavior, reactions, some formatting, and other information that the application does not include in its export. Included media is normally separate and must be arranged manually if it needs to appear inside the PDF.

If the original phone number, account, recovery key, password, or compatible application is unavailable, normal restoration may be impossible. Modern WhatsApp encryption is not reliably bypassed by renaming files or opening them in a SQLite utility; altering the database can also make restoration fail. A PDF generated from a partial export should be labeled as such, and the untouched backup should be retained when it may be needed for further recovery.
