People usually need this conversion to extract WhatsApp messages for searching, editing, sharing, or archiving in a program that accepts plain text. A .crypt file cannot become readable text by renaming it; it must first be decrypted by the application, password, or key that created it.
What the CRYPT format is
.crypt, .crypt7, .crypt8, .crypt12, .crypt14, and .crypt15 are not versions of one universal format. WhatsApp used several of these extensions for encrypted Android chat databases, commonly named msgstore.db.crypt14 or msgstore.db.crypt15. Other programs may use .crypt for encrypted archives, notes, databases, or documents.
A WhatsApp backup is an encrypted database, not a text document. Decryption may require the original WhatsApp account, device-related credentials, a backup password, or the associated 64-digit encryption key. A generic file converter cannot interpret the database or reconstruct messages without those requirements.
What the TXT format is
.txt is a plain-text file containing character data without document layout, images, attachments, or application-specific database structure. It opens in Notepad, TextEdit, code editors, document systems, and command-line tools.
TXT is suitable for searching, editing, portability, and long-term basic archiving. Save the output as UTF-8 to preserve accented characters, non-Latin scripts, and emoji; plain text cannot preserve WhatsApp formatting, reactions, media, or all metadata reliably.
How to convert a WhatsApp CRYPT backup
- Make a working copy of the original file and keep the original unchanged. Renaming
msgstore.db.crypt14ormsgstore.db.crypt15to.txtchanges only the filename and does not decrypt the contents. - Use WhatsApp's supported restore process on the original or an authorized replacement device. The backup generally must match the relevant WhatsApp account, and an end-to-end encrypted backup requires its backup password or 64-digit key.
- Open the restored conversation and use WhatsApp's export function. On Android, this is commonly Chat menu → More → Export chat; on iPhone, it is commonly Contact or group info → Export Chat. The exact labels vary by app version.
- Choose whether to include media. A text-only export is smaller; including media normally creates an archive containing the readable chat transcript and separate attachments.
- Open the exported transcript in a text editor, verify its character encoding and message order, and save it as
conversation.txtusing UTF-8 if WhatsApp did not already produce the required TXT file.
For older WhatsApp backups that you are authorized to decrypt, a desktop program such as WhatsApp Viewer may read some legacy database versions when supplied with the correct database key. Its support for .crypt12, .crypt14, and .crypt15 is limited and version-dependent; it cannot recover a missing key. Treat unofficial utilities as untrusted software, obtain them only from a verifiable source, and work on a copy of the backup.
How to convert another type of CRYPT file
- Identify the program that created the file from its source, filename, extension variant, or operating-system metadata. The extension alone does not identify the encryption method.
- Install the originating desktop application, open the file, and enter the original password or key. Use that program's decryption or export command, such as File → Decrypt or File → Export.
- If decryption produces readable content, open the result in a plain-text editor and choose Save as. Name the file
output.txtand select UTF-8 encoding. - If decryption produces a database, inspect it with a compatible database tool. For a decrypted SQLite database, DB Browser for SQLite can export selected tables through File → Export → Table(s) as CSV. Open the CSV in a text editor and save it as UTF-8 TXT. The result contains delimited records, not a formatted conversation.
Compatibility and security limitations
Without the correct password, encryption key, device credentials, or originating application, conversion is generally impossible. File-recovery tools and online converters do not bypass modern WhatsApp encryption.
There is no reputable universal online converter for arbitrary CRYPT files. Do not upload WhatsApp backups or other private encrypted files to a web service: the upload can expose messages, account metadata, attachments, or decryption material, and a service that does not know the exact format cannot produce a valid result. Online converters are appropriate only for already decrypted, non-sensitive files in a format they explicitly support; use the originating application or a trusted offline tool for CRYPT data.
Check the resulting TXT manually for missing media, altered line breaks, unsupported Unicode characters, incorrect timestamps, message-order changes, and database fields that were not intended for the transcript.

Frequently asked questions
Can I convert a WhatsApp .crypt file directly to .txt?
No, a .crypt file must be decrypted and its message database extracted before it can become readable UTF-8 text. Renaming the extension or treating the encrypted binary as text will usually produce unreadable characters.
Will converting .crypt to .txt keep my WhatsApp messages and media?
The text of successfully extracted messages can be preserved, but media files, database structure, message formatting, and some metadata may not carry over to plain text. Attachments are generally referenced separately rather than embedded as usable files in the .txt result.
Why does my .crypt to .txt conversion fail or show gibberish?
This usually happens because the file is still encrypted, the required decryption key is unavailable, or the extraction method does not support that CRYPT variant. A damaged or incomplete backup can also prevent messages from being decoded correctly.
Can I convert the resulting .txt file back into a .crypt backup?
No, plain text does not contain the encrypted database structure, keys, metadata, and attachments needed to recreate a working CRYPT backup. The conversion is mainly an export of readable message content, not a reversible format change.
