Convert SPB to TXT

Older Samsung Kies backups may need conversion when contacts must be edited without Kies, shared as readable text, or imported into software that accepts delimited data. The practical route is to decode the .spb backup and export the contacts before creating a .txt file.

What the SPB format is

SPB in the Mobile platforms category is a Samsung Kies phonebook backup format used with older Samsung phones. It can contain contact names, telephone numbers, email addresses, organizations, notes, groups, and other phonebook fields.

SPB is a proprietary backup container, not a plain-text document. Opening it in a text editor or renaming it to .txt does not convert the records and may make the backup harder to identify. The original file should be preserved unchanged.

What the TXT format is

TXT is a plain-text format supported by desktop and mobile operating systems. It is easy to search, edit, archive, and share, and usually produces smaller files than structured contact formats.

TXT has no standard contact schema. A file may contain one contact per line, tab-separated columns, comma-separated columns, or labelled fields such as Name: and Phone:. If another application must import the result, confirm its required delimiter, column order, character encoding, and line-ending style first. For contact import, CSV or vCard is usually more appropriate than TXT.

How to convert SPB to TXT

Use Samsung Kies

1. Install the Samsung Kies release that created the backup, or a release compatible with that .spb file. Kies is discontinued, and Samsung does not provide a current conversion service; use an installer from a trusted, verifiable source and scan it before installation.
2. Make a working copy of the SPB file. Start Kies and open its backup or restore function. Menu names vary by Kies version; look for Tools → Restore data or an equivalent command.
3. Select the backup and restore the contacts to a compatible Samsung phone or to the Kies contact database. Some Kies releases can read the backup only through the restore workflow and do not provide direct SPB export.
4. Open the restored contacts and use the available Contacts → Import/Export or File → Export command. Export to CSV if available; vCard is also useful as an intermediate format. Kies versions differ in the formats and commands they offer.
5. Open the CSV in LibreOffice Calc or Microsoft Excel. Check that names, numbers, email addresses, and other fields are in the intended columns, then use File → Save As and select a text format. Choose tab or comma delimiters and UTF-8 encoding when the destination permits it.
6. If Kies exports only vCard, import the .vcf file into a contact manager or spreadsheet that can expose its fields, then export the records as delimited text. Renaming .vcf to .txt only changes the filename extension; it does not create the requested contact-list layout.

Use a local SPB decoder

If Kies cannot read or restore the backup, use a dedicated Samsung Kies SPB contact converter that explicitly documents .spb input and exports CSV, vCard, or text. Prefer a tool that runs locally, displays a field preview, supports Unicode, and leaves the source file untouched. After decoding, open the CSV or vCard in a spreadsheet and save it as UTF-8 text with the delimiter required by the receiving application.

Generic file-conversion sites generally do not support Samsung Kies SPB files, and an upload service cannot be recommended unless it explicitly lists this format, explains retention and deletion, and uses encrypted transfer. SPB backups contain personal contact data, so local processing is safer than uploading them to an unverified website.

Quality and compatibility limits

Conversion to TXT can discard contact groups, profile labels, multiple-number types, photos, notes, synchronization metadata, and fields that have no corresponding text column. Verify accented names, non-Latin scripts, leading zeroes, international prefixes, duplicate contacts, and multiple telephone numbers after export.

Keep the original SPB and the intermediate CSV or vCard. Use UTF-8 unless the destination specifically requires another encoding; legacy software may instead require a regional Windows code page. Confirm the final delimiter and line endings before importing the TXT file.
