How to convert spb to xls file

Older Samsung contact backups are often needed when a contact list must be edited in Excel, supplied to a CRM, or imported into a system that accepts spreadsheets. Excel cannot read a Samsung .spb phonebook backup directly; the contacts must first be exported by compatible Samsung software.

What the SPB format is

.spb is a proprietary phonebook-backup extension used by legacy Samsung desktop software, most commonly Samsung Kies and, for some older devices, Samsung PC Studio. It can contain contact names, phone numbers, email addresses, groups, addresses, and device-specific contact fields.

The extension is not unique to Samsung software. Confirm the file's source from its backup folder, device model, or the software that created it before choosing a tool. Renaming an SPB file to XLS does not convert it.

What the XLS format is

.xls is the Excel 97–2003 workbook format. It stores contacts as rows and columns and is accepted by older business programs that cannot use the newer .xlsx format.

Use .xlsx unless the receiving program explicitly requires .xls. Current Excel and LibreOffice Calc can open and save both formats.

Export contacts from the Samsung backup

  1. Install the legacy Samsung program that created the backup: usually Samsung Kies, or Samsung PC Studio for an older PC Studio backup. Samsung Smart Switch is not a general SPB converter and may not import these files.
  2. Open the program's backup restore, import, or phonebook function and select the .spb file. Menu names vary by version; look for Backup/Restore, Import, or Phonebook.
  3. After the contacts load, export them as .csv. If the program offers only .vcf (vCard), import that file into Outlook or another contact manager that can export CSV.
  4. Keep the original .spb and exported .csv unchanged as recovery copies.

Samsung Kies and PC Studio are discontinued legacy applications. They may require an older Windows release, compatibility mode, or the matching Samsung USB drivers. If the software cannot read the file, test a copy on a compatible older PC or virtual machine rather than altering the original backup.

Save the exported CSV as XLS

  1. In Excel, use Data → From Text/CSV instead of double-clicking the CSV file.
  2. Select the correct delimiter, usually comma or semicolon. In the import preview, set telephone, postal-code, account-number, and identifier columns to Text.
  3. Check that international telephone numbers retain the + prefix and that leading zeroes remain intact.
  4. Choose File → Save As, select Excel 97–2003 Workbook (*.xls), and save the workbook.

LibreOffice Calc provides the same workflow: open the CSV, set affected columns to Text in the import dialog, then use File → Save As and select Excel 97–2003 (.xls).

Online conversion and data limits

There is no broadly reliable online converter for Samsung SPB phonebook backups, so use the originating Samsung software for the SPB-to-CSV step. After export, services such as CloudConvert can convert a CSV to XLS, but uploading a contact list exposes names, telephone numbers, and email addresses to a third party; desktop Excel or LibreOffice is preferable for private data.

CSV and XLS cannot fully preserve phonebook-only features. Contact photos, custom ringtones, SIM-storage status, group membership, multiple labelled numbers, and vendor-specific fields can be omitted or flattened into columns. Open the final workbook and compare several contacts with the source before importing it into another system.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert an SPB phonebook backup directly to XLS?

No, an SPB backup normally needs to be exported to CSV before it can be saved as an XLS spreadsheet. Renaming .spb to .xls will not make the backup readable as a spreadsheet.

Will my contacts and phone numbers stay intact when converting SPB to XLS?

Most standard contact fields can be preserved as spreadsheet columns, but backup-specific information and unsupported fields may be omitted. Phone numbers with leading zeros can change if the spreadsheet treats them as numbers, so they should be imported as text.

Will an XLS file made from SPB still restore contacts to my phone?

No, the XLS result is an editable contact table rather than a native Samsung phonebook backup. It is useful for viewing or editing data, but it generally cannot be used directly to restore the original backup.

Why are some contact details missing or mixed up after converting SPB to XLS?

This usually happens when the CSV intermediary parses commas, quotation marks, line breaks, character encoding, or fields differently from the original backup. Check the CSV column mapping and encoding before saving it as XLS, especially for names, notes, and multiple phone numbers.
