Convert SPB to XLSX

A Samsung Kies contact backup may need conversion when the original phone is unavailable but the contacts must be edited, shared, or archived in Excel. The practical route is to extract the contacts from .spb as CSV or VCF, then save that data as .xlsx.

What the SPB format is

In the Mobile platforms context, .spb is a proprietary Samsung Kies phonebook-backup format. Older Samsung feature phones and smartphones used Kies to transfer, back up, and restore contacts in this format.

SPB is not a spreadsheet. Excel, LibreOffice Calc, Google Sheets, and similar programs normally cannot open it directly, and renaming .spb to .xlsx only changes the filename; it does not convert the data.

What the XLSX format is

.xlsx is the Office Open XML workbook format used by Microsoft Excel and supported by LibreOffice Calc, Apple Numbers, and web spreadsheet applications. It stores contact fields in rows and columns, allowing sorting, filtering, editing, reporting, and ordinary document sharing.

The workbook can contain exported fields such as names, phone numbers, email addresses, companies, postal addresses, notes, and groups. It is a data extract, not a replacement for the Samsung backup: device-specific restore data, synchronization settings, contact photos, and other metadata may not have an XLSX equivalent.

How to convert SPB to XLSX

Use Samsung Kies as the extractor

1. Make a working copy of the original file, such as contacts.spb, and keep the original unchanged.
2. Install the Samsung Kies release compatible with the backup, if available from a trustworthy Samsung archive or an installation source maintained by your organization. Kies is discontinued, and Kies 3 or Smart Switch should not be assumed to open every SPB file created by older Kies versions.
3. Open Kies and use its contacts, import, or backup-and-restore functions to load the SPB data. Menu names differ by release; the relevant command may appear under Tools → Backup and restore or in the contacts panel.
4. Export the loaded contacts. Choose CSV if available. If the installation exports only vCard, save the contacts as .vcf.
5. Open the CSV in Excel or LibreOffice Calc using the import dialog. Select UTF-8 when available, choose the correct delimiter, and set phone-number, postal-code, and other identifier columns to Text. This prevents lost leading zeroes, altered plus signs, and scientific notation.
6. Check the column mapping and records, then use File → Save As and select Excel Workbook (*.xlsx).

Convert through vCard when CSV is unavailable

Import the exported .vcf file into a desktop contacts application that supports CSV export, then open the CSV in Excel or Calc and save it as .xlsx. Google Contacts can also import vCard and provide Export → Google CSV; use that option only when uploading the contacts is acceptable.

Online conversion options

There is no broadly reliable, reputable direct SPB-to-XLSX web converter. SPB is proprietary, Kies is discontinued, and uploading a phonebook to an unknown conversion site exposes names, phone numbers, addresses, and email addresses.

After Kies has produced CSV or VCF, a reputable spreadsheet service such as Microsoft Excel for the web or Google Sheets can open the intermediate file and export an XLSX workbook. A known CSV-to-XLSX conversion service may also handle the final step, but it should not receive confidential contacts; verify its privacy and deletion policy first. Online tools cannot recover SPB data that they do not explicitly support.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Review duplicate entries created by separate phone, SIM, or synchronized contact copies.
• Inspect non-Latin names, accented characters, line breaks, multiline addresses, dates, and empty fields after import.
• Keep phone numbers and other numeric-looking identifiers as text; spreadsheet software may otherwise remove zeroes or reformat long values.
• Exported fields depend on what Kies and the backup contain. Photos, groups, ringtones, synchronization metadata, and device-restore information may be omitted.
• An XLSX workbook generally cannot be restored directly to a Samsung phone as an SPB backup. Retain the original .spb file for future recovery.
