Convert crypt to html

Convert CRYPT to HTML

Convert a restored WhatsApp CRYPT backup into a browser-readable HTML chat export.

Make HTML files online

We can't read CRYPT files yet, so this conversion isn't available. If you can export your work to one of these formats - or others - we'll turn it into HTML:

How to convert crypt to html file

People need this conversion when they must read a WhatsApp backup in a browser or create a searchable copy for sharing or archiving; browsers and HTML editors cannot open an encrypted database. The CRYPT file must be restored or decrypted before its messages can be converted into HTML.

What the CRYPT format is

.crypt, .crypt12, .crypt14, and related extensions can identify encrypted WhatsApp message databases, commonly named like msgstore.db.crypt14. WhatsApp creates these backups on Android devices, while the encryption key is managed by the app and is not normally stored beside the database as a simple, usable file.

The extension is not unique to WhatsApp. Ransomware and other encryption programs also create files ending in .crypt, so check the source application, filename, device, and folder before selecting a conversion method. Renaming a file to .html changes only its name; it does not decrypt or convert the contents.

What HTML is

HTML is a browser-readable text format for headings, paragraphs, links, tables, images, and basic styling. A converted chat can be opened locally, indexed by some desktop search tools, or placed on a website after sensitive information has been removed.

An HTML export normally has no WhatsApp encryption. Protect it with encrypted storage, filesystem permissions, or an encrypted archive if the conversation contains personal or confidential data.

How to convert a WhatsApp CRYPT backup

  1. Make a backup copy. Work on a copy of the original database and do not upload the CRYPT file or its key to an untrusted service.
  2. Restore the database in WhatsApp. Use the phone number and, when applicable, the Google account associated with the backup. Local Android backups may require placing the file in WhatsApp's expected backup folder and using a compatible app version. WhatsApp may reject an old, damaged, renamed, or unsupported database.
  3. Export the chat from the restored conversation. On Android, open the chat and choose More → Export chat; on iPhone, open the chat information screen and choose Export Chat. Select Without media for a smaller text export or With media when attachments are required. WhatsApp usually produces a .txt file, often inside a ZIP archive.
  4. Convert the text export to HTML. Pandoc can create a complete HTML document from the extracted file:
pandoc chat.txt -f markdown+hard_line_breaks -t html5 -s -o chat.html

The -s option creates a standalone document, and hard_line_breaks helps retain the separate lines used by WhatsApp's text export. Open chat.html in a browser and check timestamps, line breaks, accented characters, and symbols.

For a graphical desktop method, open chat.txt in LibreOffice Writer and choose File → Save As, then select HTML Document. Review the result because word processors can add unnecessary styles and alter line spacing.

CloudConvert and Convertio may provide TXT-to-HTML conversion through their web interfaces. Use an online service only for a non-sensitive, already-exported text file; these services cannot legitimately decrypt a WhatsApp CRYPT database without the required WhatsApp data and key.

Quality and compatibility limitations

WhatsApp's text export generally preserves message text, sender labels, and timestamps, but not the original chat interface, reactions, reply links, encryption metadata, or all formatting. The With media option produces attachments separately; converting only chat.txt does not embed the images, videos, voice notes, or documents in chat.html.

HTML conversion is therefore an export-format change, not a recovery method. If WhatsApp cannot restore the database, identify the exact backup version and preserve the original before seeking a specialist; random decryptors can destroy evidence or expose the chat. If the CRYPT file came from ransomware or another unrelated application, identify that software and use its documented decryptor or a reputable incident-response service. Without the correct key and compatible application, direct CRYPT-to-HTML conversion is not technically possible.
