Convert CRYPT to JPG

Recover images from encrypted CRYPT backups and export them as compatible JPG files.

We can't read CRYPT files yet, so this conversion isn't available. If you can export your work to one of these formats - or others - we'll turn it into JPG:

How to convert crypt to jpg file

A WhatsApp backup may need to become a JPG when you need to share, edit, print, or archive a photograph outside WhatsApp. A .crypt backup is not normally an image, so the usable workflow is to restore or decrypt it, recover the original media, and export that image as .jpg.

What the CRYPT format is

.crypt, .crypt12, .crypt14, and similar extensions commonly identify encrypted WhatsApp chat databases on Android. These databases contain messages and metadata, not ordinary photographs. WhatsApp media is stored separately, often already as .jpg, .jpeg, .png, or .webp.

The extension is not a universal format identifier. Backup utilities, security software, and malware can also append .crypt to encrypted files. The complete filename, source application, storage location, and file signature are needed before selecting a recovery method.

What the JPG format is

JPG, or JPEG, is a widely supported photographic image format accepted by browsers, phones, image editors, printers, and document systems. Its lossy compression produces smaller files than many lossless formats, but it does not support transparency, layers, or exact pixel preservation. Repeatedly saving a JPEG can reduce image quality.

How to recover and export a JPG

For a WhatsApp backup on Android:

  1. Do not rename .crypt to .jpg. Renaming changes only the filename extension; it does not decrypt or convert the data.
  2. Restore the backup through WhatsApp using the phone number and Google account associated with the backup. A local backup must be placed in the location WhatsApp expects, while an end-to-end encrypted backup may also require its password or 64-digit key.
  3. Open the restored chat and save the required photograph, or copy it from a WhatsApp media folder. Common locations include Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media/WhatsApp Images on newer Android installations and WhatsApp/Media/WhatsApp Images on older ones.
  4. If the recovered file is already a JPEG, keep that original instead of exporting it again. If it is another image type, open it in GIMP, IrfanView, XnView MP, or ImageMagick and export it as .jpg.

In ImageMagick, a typical conversion is magick input.png -quality 92 output.jpg. In GIMP, use File → Export As, enter a filename ending in .jpg, and choose the JPEG quality in the export dialog.

On iPhone, WhatsApp backups are generally managed through iCloud and are not exposed as directly convertible .crypt database files. Restore the backup in WhatsApp, save the photograph to Photos or Files, then export or convert that recovered image on the phone or computer.

Using an online converter

Online services such as CloudConvert or Convertio can convert a normal image such as PNG, WebP, or TIFF to JPG after recovery. They generally cannot decrypt WhatsApp .crypt12, .crypt14, or other encrypted databases. Upload only a non-sensitive image; a private photograph or backup sent to a third-party server may be retained or processed outside your control.

For confidential media, use GIMP, IrfanView, XnView MP, or ImageMagick locally. Desktop conversion also avoids upload-size limits and preserves the original file under your control.

Handling an unknown CRYPT file

  1. Record the exact extension, creating application, download source, and folder location. A file named backup.crypt14 requires a different method from a file renamed by ransomware.
  2. Use the original application's restore, decrypt, or export function. On Linux or macOS, file filename.crypt may identify a recognizable file signature, but it cannot decrypt protected content.
  3. After recovery, inspect the output with an image viewer. Convert it to JPG only if it is a genuine image and the receiving application requires JPEG.

Do not upload a WhatsApp database, unknown encrypted file, or ransomware-encrypted file to a conversion website. A malware-encrypted file requires backup restoration, a security professional, or an appropriate incident-response and decryption process; changing its extension or converting its bytes will not recover the image.

Quality and compatibility limits

There is no direct image conversion when the CRYPT file contains only an encrypted database or text. A screenshot can create a JPG representation of an on-screen chat, but it does not extract the original photograph and may reduce resolution.

Use a JPEG quality setting around 90–95 for a balance between detail and size. Preserve the original PNG or WebP when transparency or lossless editing matters, and preserve the recovered JPEG when it is already in the required format to avoid another lossy-compression cycle.

Simply put, it is impossible to convert CRYPT to JPG directly.
Thus, there is no so-called crypt to jpg converter or a free online .crypt to .jpg conversion tool.
