Convert VMSG to TXT

A voicemail backup may need to become TXT for searching, editing, sharing, or importing into software that accepts only plain text. The correct method depends on whether the VMSG file contains readable transcription text, a MIME-style message with an attachment, or only an audio recording.

What the VMSG format is

.vmsg is commonly used by visual voicemail apps, mobile carriers, phone manufacturers, and voicemail backup utilities. It is not one universal format: files from different vendors may contain plain-text headers and transcription, MIME-style metadata with an audio attachment, or proprietary data that requires the original application.

VMSG files are typically created when voicemail is exported or backed up from an Android phone, carrier voicemail service, or OEM utility. The extension alone does not reveal whether the file contains a transcript, audio, or both.

What the TXT format is

.txt stores characters as plain text without page layout, images, audio, or application-specific formatting. It opens in Notepad, TextEdit, VS Code, Notepad++, command-line tools, and most document or archive systems.

TXT is suitable for a searchable transcript, a small archival copy, or text imported into another program. It cannot preserve the original recording, waveform, attachments, caller identity, timestamps, or rich metadata unless those details are written into the text manually.

How to convert a readable VMSG file

1. Make a backup of the original file and work on a copy.
2. Open the copy in VS Code or Notepad++. These editors can display large files and help identify encoding or binary content.
3. If the contents are readable, remove unwanted headers, MIME boundaries, or encoded blocks while retaining the transcription.
4. Use File → Save As, name the output something such as voicemail.txt, choose UTF-8 encoding, and save.

If the entire VMSG file is already ordinary text, renaming voicemail.vmsg to voicemail.txt may be enough because the contents do not change. Renaming a binary or proprietary VMSG file does not convert it.

How to extract text and attachments

Open the file in an editor and search for fields such as Content-Type:, Content-Disposition:, Content-Transfer-Encoding:, or an audio filename. On macOS or Linux, this command provides a basic file-type indication:

file voicemail.vmsg

If the file is a valid MIME message, a MIME extractor such as munpack or ripmime can separate its text and attachments. For example:

munpack voicemail.vmsg

Open the extracted text part and save it as UTF-8 TXT. If extraction produces only an audio file such as AMR, WAV, or M4A, there is no direct text conversion; the recording must first be transcribed with speech-recognition software. Whisper or a desktop application built around it can produce a text transcript, for example:

whisper voicemail.wav --output_format txt

The command requires a suitable Whisper installation and audio-decoding support such as FFmpeg. Review the resulting transcript because names, telephone numbers, accents, and background noise can cause errors.

Online conversion options

Online services such as CloudConvert and Zamzar are appropriate only when their current upload page explicitly lists VMSG as an input format. VMSG has no consistent structure, so a service that accepts one vendor's files may reject another's or produce unusable output. Do not upload voicemail containing personal, financial, medical, or business-confidential information unless the service's handling and deletion terms are acceptable.

Quality and compatibility limits

A VMSG-to-TXT export can preserve embedded transcription text, but it cannot recreate words that exist only in an audio recording. Speech-to-text output may misrecognize names, numbers, speakers, and technical terms; compare it with the recording before using it as a legal, medical, or business record.

Keep the original VMSG and any extracted audio. TXT removes audio, metadata, attachments, and application-specific information, and a proprietary VMSG may be readable only through the carrier, phone, or backup application that created it.
