Mobile phone backups often store SMS conversations as VMSG, while spreadsheets require XLSX for filtering, reporting, editing, or long-term archiving. Converting the messages into worksheet rows makes sender, recipient, date, status, and message text usable in spreadsheet software.

What the VMSG format is

VMSG is a text-based mobile messaging format derived from the vMessage specification. Phone backup utilities and mobile synchronization software use it to export SMS messages, commonly from older Nokia, Samsung, Siemens, and other feature phones.

A VMSG file usually contains one or more message envelopes with fields such as sender or recipient telephone number, message date, read status, message type, and body text. The file may use quoted-printable encoding or character-set declarations, and one file can contain many separate SMS records. It is intended for transferring or restoring messages, not for direct spreadsheet editing.

What the XLSX format is

XLSX is the XML-based workbook format used by Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice Calc, and other spreadsheet applications. It supports multiple worksheets, filters, sorting, formulas, cell formatting, Unicode text, and structured tabular data.

For SMS archives, an XLSX worksheet can assign one message to each row and preserve fields such as date, sender, recipient, folder, read status, and body. XLSX is preferable when the archive must be searched, filtered, edited, or combined with other records.

How to convert VMSG to XLSX

Using the online converter

Preparing the workbook after conversion

Keep one SMS per row. Recommended columns are Date, From, To, Folder, Status, Type, and Message. Set telephone-number columns to text format so leading plus signs, zeros, and long numbers are not altered. Set the message column to wrap text and preserve line breaks.

Quality and compatibility limitations

VMSG generally stores SMS metadata and text only. MMS media, delivery reports, contact photos, application-specific labels, and unsupported attachment references may be absent from the XLSX output because they were never represented in the source file.

Different phone programs use nonstandard VMSG fields, so unknown fields may be omitted or placed in a generic column. Quoted-printable text, legacy character encodings, emoji, and line breaks should be checked after conversion. Very large archives may produce a workbook near Excel's worksheet limit of 1,048,576 rows; split the archive before conversion if necessary.

Do not open an untrusted VMSG file in a text editor and resave it before conversion: changing line endings, encodings, or quoted-printable markers can corrupt message boundaries and characters.
