A VMG file usually contains an SMS exported from an older Nokia phone, while XLSX is required for spreadsheet editing, filtering, reporting, or archiving. Converting the message data into worksheet columns makes sender, recipient, date, status, and message text easier to manage.

What the VMG format is

VMG is a text-based vMessage format used by Nokia mobile phones and Nokia PC Suite or Nokia Suite to save SMS and other short-message records. It commonly appears in backups from Symbian-era Nokia devices, with one message stored in each .vmg file.

A VMG file can contain fields such as sender or recipient, timestamp, message status, character-set information, and the message body. The body may use quoted-printable encoding or another legacy character encoding, so opening the file in a basic text editor does not always display the message correctly.

What the XLSX format is

XLSX is the XML-based spreadsheet format used by Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice Calc, Apple Numbers, and many data-processing applications. A converted workbook can place each VMG message in a row and expose fields such as date, phone number, direction, status, and text as separate columns.

XLSX is useful when you need to sort or filter messages, search a large archive, remove duplicates, add notes, calculate message counts, or share the data with someone who does not use Nokia backup software.

How to convert VMG to XLSX

Using desktop software

LibreOffice Calc and Microsoft Excel generally do not parse Nokia VMG records as spreadsheet data when a VMG file is opened directly. A VMG-aware phone-backup utility or a custom parser must first decode the records and write a table; that table can then be saved through File → Save As in XLSX format.

Quality and compatibility limitations

• Conversion extracts message metadata and text; it does not turn an SMS archive into a native Nokia backup that can be restored to a phone.
• Older VMG files may use Nokia-specific fields, missing timestamps, or local character encodings. Check accented characters, line breaks, and non-Latin scripts after conversion.
• SMS attachments, multimedia content, and phone-book links may not be represented in the XLSX output. Keep the original files if those details matter.
• VMG files can contain private messages and phone numbers. Review the destination service's privacy terms and delete uploaded copies when appropriate.
