Free online VMG to PDF converter

Older Nokia phones and Nokia PC Suite export SMS messages as VMG files, but current devices and document systems usually require PDF for sharing, printing, or archiving. Converting the files produces a readable document while preserving the original VMG for later verification.

What the VMG format is

In the mobile-platform context, VMG is a vMessage file used mainly by older Nokia phones and Nokia PC Suite or Ovi Suite to store individual SMS messages. It is usually a text-based container with fields such as the message body, sender or recipient, date, status, and Nokia-specific identifiers.

VMG files commonly contain markers such as BEGIN:VMSG and BODY:. Character encoding and escaping vary between phone models and export tools, so a file may display incorrectly in a basic text editor even though its message content is intact. VMG is not a page-layout format and does not normally preserve a complete conversation, contact database, or phone backup.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a page-oriented document format that preserves the converted text layout, page breaks, fonts, and printable presentation across operating systems. It is suitable for sending SMS records, producing paper copies, attaching messages to case files, and keeping a human-readable archive.

A text-based conversion normally creates searchable PDF text. A PDF made from a screenshot or scanned printout contains only an image unless OCR is applied. PDF also records the converted representation, not proof that the source VMG was unmodified.

How to convert VMG to PDF

ABC Amber Nokia Converter is a Windows utility designed for Nokia message files and is the most practical option for batches of VMG files. Menu names depend on the release, but the workflow is generally:

1. Copy the VMG files to a working folder and retain the originals unchanged.
2. Open the converter, then add the files or the folder containing them.
3. Check the decoded message body, sender, recipient, dates, and character display in the preview.
4. Select PDF as the output format, choose a destination folder, and start the conversion.
5. Open several output files and check accented characters, non-Latin text, timestamps, and message boundaries.

Use the program's encoding or preview options if characters are wrong. Batch processing avoids manually opening and printing every message.

Using LibreOffice or a PDF printer

For one or a few VMG files, LibreOffice Writer or a text editor with encoding selection can be sufficient:

1. Work on a copy of the VMG file.
2. Open it as text and select the encoding that displays the message correctly; do not assume that UTF-8 is correct for every Nokia export.
3. Keep the technical headers when sender, recipient, date, status, or provenance matter. Remove them only for a simplified personal copy.
4. In LibreOffice, choose File → Export as PDF. In a compatible Windows text editor, choose Print → Microsoft Print to PDF.

This method may expose raw VMG markers, quoted or escaped text, and Nokia-specific fields. It also does not reliably decode every export variant or combine a large collection into chronological conversations.

Using an online converter

Online services often do not accept VMG, even when they support common document formats. Use a reputable service only when its current format list explicitly includes .vmg as an input and PDF as an output. Uploading SMS files exposes message contents to a third party, so check retention and deletion terms before using such a service; local conversion is preferable for private or sensitive messages.

Quality and compatibility limitations

A VMG normally contains one SMS and selected metadata, not the complete state of the original phone. MMS images, audio, delivery reports, folders, contact records, and conversation threading may be stored separately or omitted and will not appear in the PDF unless they are supplied separately.

One conversation may be represented by multiple VMG files. Convert the relevant files together and sort by the embedded date and time rather than relying on filenames. Verify line breaks, Unicode characters, quotation marks, and sender information before deleting any source files.

Keep the original VMG files alongside the PDFs when the messages may be needed for legal, technical, or evidentiary purposes. The VMG preserves the source data for later decoding, while the PDF provides a convenient rendered copy.
