Convert CRYPT14 to TEXT

A phone replacement, audit, or need to edit WhatsApp messages can require a readable .txt file instead of an encrypted backup. The supported route is to restore the .crypt14 database in WhatsApp and use WhatsApp’s chat-export function.

What the CRYPT14 format is

CRYPT14 is an encrypted WhatsApp database format used mainly for local Android backups. Typical filenames include msgstore.db.crypt14 and dated files such as msgstore-2025-01-31.1.db.crypt14, normally stored in WhatsApp’s Databases folder.

The file contains structured chat records and references to media, but its contents are encrypted with WhatsApp backup credentials. Changing .crypt14 to .txt, opening the file in SQLite software, or using a generic file converter does not decrypt it. Accessing it may require the original phone, the matching WhatsApp account, and the applicable encryption key.

What the TEXT format is

A .txt file contains unformatted character data that opens in Notepad, TextEdit, code editors, and most document-processing software. It is convenient for searching, quoting, editing, archiving, and sharing messages without WhatsApp.

WhatsApp’s export normally writes timestamps, sender names, and message text. With media, WhatsApp supplies the attachments separately, usually in an archive; the text file does not embed those media files as readable text.

How to convert CRYPT14 to TEXT

1. Keep an untouched copy of the original .crypt14 file. Perform all renaming or copying on a duplicate.
2. On an Android phone, place the copy in the WhatsApp database folder. Depending on the Android and WhatsApp versions, this is usually /Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Databases/ or the older /WhatsApp/Databases/ path.
3. If the file is a dated backup, make the duplicate’s filename msgstore.db.crypt14 when required by the installed WhatsApp version. Change only the filename; do not remove or alter .crypt14.
4. Install or reinstall the official WhatsApp Android application, verify the same phone number used to create the backup, and allow WhatsApp to search for local backups. A Google account is additionally required when restoring a Google Drive backup; it is not what decrypts a local file.
5. After WhatsApp detects the backup, choose Restore. If both cloud and local backups are present, follow WhatsApp’s prompts and select the intended source where that option is offered.
6. Open the required conversation and choose More options → More → Export chat. Select Without media for a compact text result, or Include media when attachments are required.
7. Save or share the generated file, commonly named like WhatsApp Chat with Contact.txt. Open it in a text editor or other application that supports plain text.

WhatsApp normally exports individual conversations rather than every conversation in one operation. Export each required chat separately. Export limits can also restrict very large chats, particularly when media is included.

Desktop and online options

There is no reputable general-purpose online CRYPT14-to-TXT converter that can decrypt the file without the required WhatsApp credentials. Do not upload a private backup to a conversion website: the service may be unable to decrypt it, and uploading exposes the chat database and potentially its media references.

Desktop SQLite viewers and ordinary archive utilities are not suitable because they cannot decrypt CRYPT14 data. Authorized digital-forensics or mobile-backup extraction software may support particular WhatsApp versions when supplied with the original device, backup key, or other authentication material, but compatibility varies and the output may be raw database records rather than a clean transcript. Use such software only for data you are authorized to access.

Quality and compatibility limits

Restoration can fail if the file is incomplete or corrupt, belongs to another phone number, requires an unavailable key, uses an unsupported WhatsApp version, or is placed under the wrong filename or folder. Current Android storage restrictions also prevent some file managers from writing directly to the required directory.

The exported text is a readable transcript, not a full database copy. It may omit deleted messages, database-only metadata, reactions, disappearing-message details, or unsupported message types. Media, contact cards, locations, and other non-text content may appear only as references or separate files. Preserve the original encrypted backup because exporting does not provide a reversible conversion.
