Free online VCF to TEXT converter

A receiving program may accept only a .txt file, or a plain-text copy may be needed for editing, searching, printing, or archiving contacts. Converting a VCF creates a readable text representation, but it can discard vCard fields that plain text cannot represent.

What the VCF format is

VCF, also called vCard, is a structured contact format used by phone address books, email clients, and contact-management software. Apple Contacts, Google Contacts, Microsoft Outlook, Thunderbird, Android, and iOS can import or export it.

A VCF file can contain one or many contact records marked by BEGIN:VCARD and END:VCARD. Records can include names, phone numbers, email addresses, postal addresses, organizations, birthdays, notes, URLs, categories, photos, and other properties. vCard versions such as 2.1, 3.0, and 4.0 define field names, encodings, line folding, and structured values.

What plain TEXT means

In the Contacts and address books category, TEXT means an ordinary text file, usually saved with a .txt extension. It has no universal contact schema: it may contain labeled lines such as Name: and Phone:, or comma-separated, tab-separated, or application-specific records.

Plain text opens in Notepad, TextEdit, terminal tools, and programming environments. It is easy to search, edit, print, and archive, and it can be read by systems that do not support vCard. It does not inherently preserve contact photos, groups, property parameters, line structure, or the distinction between all vCard field types.

How to convert a VCF file

Use the converter on 101convert.com when you need a straightforward .txt result without installing software:

1. Open the VCF-to-TEXT converter on 101convert.com.
2. Select the source file, for example contacts.vcf.
3. Start the conversion and choose any available text layout, delimiter, or encoding options.
4. Download the resulting .txt file.
5. Open it in a text editor and check names, telephone numbers, email addresses, line breaks, and non-Latin characters.

Contact lists contain personal information, so upload them only when the service's data-handling terms are suitable for the file. For confidential address books, use local software instead.

A contact application is useful when the output must be mapped into a particular layout. Import the VCF, then use the program's export command, such as File → Export. Depending on the application, the available destination may be TXT, CSV, or TSV rather than a format explicitly named TEXT. CSV and TSV are also plain-text formats, but their fields are separated by commas or tabs and should be interpreted using the header row and delimiter.

Before exporting, check the application's field-selection and encoding settings. Select UTF-8 when available, and include all required fields. Some applications export only the currently selected contact or omit photos, categories, custom fields, and contact groups.

If the requirement is only to read the VCF or give it a text-file extension, no data conversion is necessary: VCF is already text-based. Open it in a text editor, or save a copy as contacts.txt using UTF-8. This preserves vCard syntax rather than producing a simplified, human-oriented contact list, and a program that expects a specific TEXT layout may still reject it. Renaming .vcf to .txt changes the filename extension only.

Quality and compatibility limits

Plain-text conversion is usually lossy. A structured postal address may become one line, repeated phone or email values may be flattened, and contact categories, group membership, property parameters, custom fields, and relationships may be omitted. Embedded photos and other binary properties are generally not useful in a simple text output.

vCard can contain escaped characters, folded lines, quoted-printable data, and different character encodings. A converter or contact application should decode these rules before writing readable text. If accented or non-Latin characters are corrupted, reopen or resave the file as UTF-8 instead of repeatedly converting it.

Keep the original VCF as the authoritative copy. A plain-text file normally cannot be imported back into an address book without assigning delimiters and mapping each label to a contact field.
