Free online VCF to EXCEL converter

A phone, email client, or contact manager may export an address book as .vcf while a reporting, editing, or sharing workflow requires an Excel workbook. Converting the contacts creates rows and columns that can be sorted, filtered, reviewed, and saved as .xlsx.

What the VCF format is

VCF, commonly called vCard, is a contact-card format usually stored with the .vcf extension. It can contain names, telephone numbers, email addresses, postal addresses, organizations, job titles, birthdays, notes, URLs, photos, categories, and other contact metadata.

Phones and contact applications create VCF files when users export or share contacts. Common sources include Android and iPhone contact exports, Microsoft Outlook, Apple Contacts, Google Contacts, Thunderbird, and CRM systems. One VCF file can contain a single contact or many consecutive vCards.

What the Excel format is

Excel workbooks normally use .xlsx, the modern Office Open XML format. The older .xls format is a legacy binary workbook format; .xlsx is generally the better output choice unless an older application requires .xls.

A converted workbook normally uses one contact per row and fields such as name, phone, email, company, and address as columns. This structure supports sorting, filtering, duplicate review, bulk editing, mail-merge preparation, reporting, and sharing with people who do not use a contact manager.

How to convert VCF contacts to Excel

Using the 101convert.com converter

1. Open the VCF-to-Excel converter on 101convert.com. It can be used free without installing software.
2. Select or drag the .vcf file into the converter.
3. Choose Excel workbook output, normally .xlsx, and start the conversion.
4. Download the generated workbook and open it in Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice Calc, or another spreadsheet application.
5. Check that the number of contact rows is plausible, then inspect names, non-Latin text, phone numbers, addresses, and repeated fields.

A VCF can contain sensitive personal information. Check the converter's data-handling requirements before uploading a private address book; use a local method for confidential data.

Using a contact application locally

When an online conversion is unsuitable, import the VCF into a desktop contact application that supports vCard, export the contacts as CSV, and open that CSV in Excel. In Excel, select UTF-8 encoding and the correct delimiter during import, verify the columns, then use File → Save As → Excel Workbook (*.xlsx).

This route is useful when the application understands a particular VCF variant better than a generic parser. The exact import and export commands vary between Outlook, Apple Contacts, Thunderbird, and other applications.

Using a local script

For repeatable processing, parse the file as vCard data rather than as comma-separated text. Install a vCard parser and an Excel writer:

A script can iterate over vobject.readComponents(), extract properties such as FN, N, ORG, TEL, and EMAIL, place one contact in each dictionary, and write the resulting list with pandas.DataFrame(rows).to_excel("contacts.xlsx", index=False). For properties that occur more than once, join the values with semicolons or create separate columns such as phone_mobile and phone_work instead of silently keeping only the first value.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Do not treat VCF as ordinary CSV. vCard uses properties such as FN:, TEL:, and EMAIL:, with version-specific parameters and line folding. Opening it directly in Excel as a delimited text file can produce one property per row rather than one contact per row.
• VCF versions differ. vCard 2.1, 3.0, and 4.0 use different encoding and property conventions. Correct conversion may require handling UTF-8 text, quoted-printable data, escaped commas and semicolons, folded lines, and character-set declarations.
• Repeated fields require a conversion policy. A contact may have several phone numbers, email addresses, or postal addresses. Excel has no native repeating-field model, so a converter must combine values into cells or expand them into multiple columns.
• Some metadata may be omitted. Photos, categories, group membership, revision timestamps, contact-manager identifiers, and application-specific properties commonly do not transfer to a simple spreadsheet.
• Names may need review. Some cards provide only a formatted display name, while others provide structured family, given, and middle names. Splitting or sorting names can therefore produce unexpected results.
• Protect numeric-looking data. Format telephone numbers, postal codes, account identifiers, and other values as Text before editing if they contain leading zeroes, plus signs, or meaningful punctuation.
• Validate before deleting the source. Compare the number of vCards with the expected number of rows, inspect multi-value fields and non-Latin characters, check for duplicates, and retain the original .vcf as a backup.
