What are the .pmdx files, and where do they come from?

There is actually only one source of pmdx files: PlanMaker, a spreadsheet application similar to Microsoft Excel that is available as part of SoftMaker Office. It is pretty much just SoftMaker's variant of Microsoft Excel's XML-based .xlsx files, and it is used exactly in the same manner for all intents and purposes.

Sometimes pmdx is confused for MikuMikuDance extended format, but the program uses PMD format, not PMDX. The only source of .pmdx files is really just PlanMaker.

Why is pmdx to excel conversion searched then?

The usual reason is that someone has .pmdx spreadsheet and cannot open or import it with the natural software choice for many, Microsoft Excel.

Steps how to convert .pmdx files to Excel formats

Due to the proprietary nature of SoftOffice formats, it was previously very difficult to export .pmdx files to their Excel counterparts without having access to PlanMaker.

However, this changed when SoftOffice's free variant, FreeOffice, was introduced. Although FreeOffice's functionality is limited compared to the full version of SoftOffice, it can import and export both Microsoft Office and SoftOffice formats, including saving. pmdx files to Excel format (.xlsx).

  1. Download FreeOffice from their websites, no account needed. Install it and make sure PlanMaker is included while remove any tools you are not planning to use
  2. Open .pmdx file in FreeOffice's PlanMaker (File ► Open)
  3. Save the imported spreadsheet to any format you want (File ► Save as..)

That is all there is to it. You may use the app itself to open and edit the spreadsheet, of course. However, it makes more sense to utilize Excel if that is what you are more comfortable with.
